Don't do that. You'd be better off building a Windsor stroker engine over 400".

Nice to see you're lost on Fantasy Island.

That is too bad that the 390 is crap. The price is right (FREE!!!) I was hoping it was a 351W, and the guy that owns it thought it was. When I got to really looking at it, I was let down to find out it wasn't.

Damn, wish I was closer. I'd take that 390 for my '71 F250 in a heartbeat!

If you can get that engine for free, and it is actually a 390 and not a 360 (they look basically identical on the outside), I would jump on it if I were you. Could make a few extra bucks off it to help fund the Mav if it's in good condition. Somebody with an older Ford truck would love to have it.

focus on one project at a time, you will get more done that way... than trying to do so much at one time. do it when money is available. it takes time unless you win the lottery then you can do it all at one time.

Actually, the 390 engine can made to be a real street monster. A 428 crank will make it a 410 with stock rods and pistons. If you get one from the '60s with a 10 to 1 compression ratio, install a 428 crank, use the new Edelbrock RPM heads for the FE, use a good cam, and the Performer RPM manifold and a 780 cfm carb, you will be well over 500 ft lbs of torque. You can actually get higher torque number out of an FE engine than you can a horsepower number. It's that deep crank. I will build a monster FE for my '66 Galaxie XL. That is a much later project.

However, having said that, I wouldn't put one in a Maverick. I'd stick with stroked 351 as ShadowMaster suggested.

Yessss, torque galore. great for pullin the big sled, or crawling up a hill. they can still be quick, but there are other ford engines that are faster for the same level of build.

The price on those MII front ends are a good $1000 less than what I have been looking at. That really makes me want to push that project up a couple of notches (ahead of paint and bodywork, of course :D ).

Would a wire-feed welder be heavy duty enough to install this thing, or would I need arc? I have access to both, but really like the small size and ease of use of the wire feed. The one I used on my shock towers was good for 3/8" plate steel.

mig welding is far neater than arc welding and as long as your machine can handle the job i would use the mig i have one and that is what i will be using for my mustang II install and all my other projects.......of coures a tig welder would give you a far neater weld but we have to use what is at uor disposal anyway good luck and keep us posted as soon as i start i will post the whole process..Barry

You'll need a 220 volt anything to be able to weld over 1/8 inch material. 110 might get the job done if you go over it a couple of times, but you have to ask yourself if the front suspension and crossmember is the place you want to take short cuts.

Arc welding is just messy, but it's nothing a grinder can't fix. They're making better rods these days too and if you have a reverse flow DC welder it's not as bad.

Whats the need for a damn 460? Mavericks dont weigh anything, a built 302 is well off.

<10 second quarter miles...shiny chunks of engine sticking out the top of the hood...being able to say "big block"...being the only one with one...need I go on?

In other words, really, there is no need for a 460 in a Maverick.
