This is an early lens for the 70 - Note how the reverse lamp lens is much bigger. Also note there are 6 indentations for the mounting screws instead of 8 found on the later lens.
Still confused. I have a 6/70 car. The back-up light on mine fills the area in the aluminum bezel, which looks like any later Maverick. Are you saying that the early '70's (69 1/2's) have something visably different?
These pictures will help. You can see on the early lens the reverse lamp lens fills up the entire area and the later lens shows a lot of red on the edges of the white. The early lens used 6 screws to hold it all together and the later version used 8 screws so the later lens has 8 indentations for the screws and the early only has 6 indentations. In typical Ford fashion - both lenses carry the same part number and SAE numbers.
Here is a picture from ebay. They are not a matched pair. Lens on right has large reverse lens and 6 screw location notches. Lens on left has small reverse lens and 8 screw notches.
So, because of the different number of screw indentations, if you bust or need to replace your 69.5(& 70?) Maverick's tail light lens, you have to find one from another 69.5/70?
Thanks Eric! I guess I was thinking about a more dramatic difference. That's something that you would have to be looking for, to notice.
No, because the later lenses have 2 extra notches - the original six locations plus 2 more. If you put an early 6 hole lens into a later housing with 8 screws - you may have a slight clearance issue with those 2 extra screws. May drive the extra screws into the edge of the early lens a bit, but no real problem to worry about.
Just one of the weird differences for first year production. Now how many have seen the early taillight bezels with about 6 drain holes drilled in the base? Later replaced by a slot milled into the extrusion instead of tiny holes .........
I took pictures and wrote all about this 3 years ago: http://mmb.maverick.to/showthread.php?t=18091&highlight=lens
