i have tried a punch and it didn't work. that pin is a spring type that (i'm told) takes a special tool to release it and push it out. if this is not correct please tell me. i do want to do away with it and grind the nub down.
    b.t.w.-- good eyes

I have a 71 2-door Grabber and I was just able to take a punch and drive out the pin. There was no spring or anything like that. It was simple so I dunno why that didn't work for you.

Try a punch or 10 penny nail.

o k guys i have tried punches and a 10 penny nail. that pin is not moving. this one is a split pin that look like it gets tighter then further it is driven into the hole. it is not a solid pin. can this be drilled out? the only thing the nail did was bend and cause me to invent a few words.

Does it look like it will come out of the bottom? Maybe the roll pin is not lined up with the hole in the bottom of the shifter nub? It should just pop right out.....no problem.

GREAT MORE DOOR Maverick! That does look kewl!

I just changed my shift handle. Hit it with some WD40 and let it sit for a bit. There could be a bit of rust holding it in. Then a little more energy with the hammer and punch and it SHOULD pop out. They are all roll pined in. Like was said above, check if the holes are lined up. Try punching from the bottom up.

That's very pretty! I have to ask, though: did you drive around to find a coordinating house to photograph in the background, or did you paint your house to complement your maverick?

the house is one nearby and it is white although kinda hard to tell in that pic. i wish i owned it. it is over 100 years old and was one of the first in the town. it is now more of a museum.
i have tried driving it up from the bottom and i think the pin is flared out. i have tried punching from the top and it did not move so i tried the bottom and i think the nail flared it out. i will try soaking it and get a bigger punch to try from the top.

If your grinding away the nub, grind around the spring pin and you should be able to remove shifter. Not sure if your going to replace with a floor collar or not. Hope this is all clear. Good luck.
