I had the same reservations about it sticking out, but since I plan on swapping dashes, I figured I had nothing to lose. I think it looks fine. The recessed lip is only about 1/16" or so. My concern was that it might not engage the plenum good enough, but really, that amount doesn't make much difference. I don't have a picture from the side, but this shows it pretty well. The tape was to protect the paint on the dash, but it ended up pulling some off. Let me know how replacing the felt on the end vents goes... I am afraid to try to take them apart and destroy them.
