Take the current air filter off, put a thin piece of cardboard or 1/4" plywood over the hole, put a tower of playdoh or silly putty on top, and slowly close the hood.

Open the hood, and measure the height of the playdoh. Find a filter that is no higher than that from where it seats onto your carb. My triangular does not sit over the carb, but on top of it, and may still be too tall.

You may need to find one that kinda hangs down over the sides, or the carb fits up into.

Look at the scoop on the SVO hood, it is off center. SVO's had 4 cyl. turbos
and the scoop was off to the side similar to what an inline 6 would require.

Below is a pic of what I was referring to. V8's didn't show up in Mavericks until
'71. This pic shows a scoop mounted off to the side of the stock hood for air
inlet on a 6 cyl. car. It indicates it is for '70-'71 Mavericks so I would guess
that this ad is from '71. Perhaps something like this can be adapted. I don't
know of any way to move your intake to the center without lots of custom
work. That is why I suggested something like the offcenter inlet on the SVO
    hood above.

The original air filter is 9" inside diameter, 11" outside diameter, and 2" tall. If you have the original housing, cut it down. It will look just like that K&N although it wont be chromed. This is assuming you are still running a 1 bbl carb.

Hey Hawko ... check out his throttle linkage .... that is a nice idea for getting the 2bbl to work ....

Was the hood closed on the car when you bought it?

Get the thinnest air filter that will fit .... Also ... if there is a spacer between the 2bbl adapter and the carb you should remove it to get a little additional clearance.

Even though that is a 2v, the flange at the top looks the same size as a 4v. I bet the low edelbrock triangular (or similar low profile for 4v) would fit. What is the measurement across the top?

That does seem to be a pretty "improved" engine. Headers? Fairly big 2v carb. Pretty heavy looking spark plug wires. No telling what is underneath.

Is that linkage hooked up to the shock towers? If so, wouldn't the rocking motion of the engine when revved be reduced/increased by the cable being hooked up there?

I don't know what the engine is, but it has a 200 valve cover. I'm not sure if they are interchangeable. The header looks alot like the one on Terry's orange '77.

That looks like a seriously worked 2150 Autolite carb. The bowl vent has been done away with to begin with not sure if that model had a choke pull off or not but it's a nice looking 2 barrel.

yea it's had a ton of work done to it. But some of what you guys are saying is over my head. But I'll tell ya its got a lot of power and he said it runs a 13 sec 1/4 mile. But anyway the svo scoop wouldn't work unless I bought a whole new hood because it already has the cutout on the hood from this scoop that would create a problem. Thanks for the help guys keep the ideas coming because I still have no idea what I need to do. Oh and I dont have the original filter.

What does the hood look like now...inside and out. I see the bracing has been cut out.

right now there is a cut out on the hood for the scoop as well as an attempt to fit the air filter in which obviously didn't work. Previous owner obviously didn't look into it before buying. outside the hinges are set up so the hood sits up higher and not flush with the body. I'd like to sit it back down to where it should be.
