You know, you should just be who you are...
If you want to make a 4x4 or a pick-up truck out of your Maverick or Comet then do it! It's YOUR car and if you want to do something that makes it personal to you then DO IT!
These cars were only meant to last 5 - 10 years and Ford made them good enough to last for us to make them into what we want. Big engines, better suspensions, better transmissions, body mods are all a reflection of our tastes and desires. If I had the time and money I might make a "Daytona" out of one with a big wing in back and a sharp nose that goes to the ground. Run a 427W and a nice C4 and gears that give a top speed high enough to use that wing.:evilsmile

I think one thing that the younger people don't understand is that All cars from 1973 on had big bumpers. Some of us got used to them and after some time it wasn't an issue any more. Back in the day I had my '74 Grabber my Mom has a '74 Grand Torino, my Dad had a '77 Lincoln Town Coupe of whitch I own now. I think my Lincoln would look strange with small bumpers! Personally, I thought the Mustang II looked strange with the "bumper covers" the same color as the body! At least my car had chorme bumpers! My first '74 Grabber was red/black stripes, deluxe interior with bucket seats, floor shifter, AM/FM stereo, tinted glass, 302/auto, cigar liter. The +'s out numbered the -'s! I could live with the bumpes. I had a new car!

There is a place for all types of cars. Resto-mods, Original, Hot Rods, Dragsters, and so forth. Personally I like the look of keeping then original, but there are people that take it too far. Example. I'm restoring a 66 chevelle SS. And I'm making it to drive not a show winner. It is all original and chevelle people that are purists have flamed me for not having the correct alternator? And not having the right battery?
Thats kinda taking it too far for me. Somethings do have to be replaced. And I like to drive my cars, no trailer queens for me. Even though I do like to make it look correct. And its cool to see stuff done like that, but don't flame me for not doing it correct to your standard.
So whats everyones thought on something like this?

As stated several times in this thread, it's your car so build it like you want it. Doesn't matter what anyone else thinks or says. It's like the rear louvers on my car. I have heard many people make the comment that they don't like them at all. Do I care? Heck no! I like them! Maybe they really don't like them or maybe they're just jealous because they can't find a set?! Who cares??? A few years ago I used to hear people say "Why build a Maverick?" although that has changed quite a bit. I just always laughed it off and said "why not"? I love my cars and don't pay any attention to anyone that has anything negative to say about them. I'm happy and that's all that matters. :)

Dang, Ray, we agree again on something.

For years, I have chosen cars that were not the most popular ones, but they appealed to me. I make these cars into my image of what I want. After all, I am the one who paid for them and the one who needs to be happy with them. I enjoy driving them as much as looking at them, so I don't worry about perfection. I make them as nice as I can and enjoy them for what they are, a really great car to own and drive.

I attend shows for the comeraderie, not the awards. Ocasionally, I win an award, like 2 years ago at the Silver Springs show. Out of over 1000 cars in attendence, my black XR7 was chosen for the "Best Preserved Ford" by Heacock Classic. Last year a Maverick won the same award. Sometimes, the little guy wins!
