    I use

I use Castrol GTX 10W-30, and a motorcraft filter(supposedly no drain-back). So far so good. In my opinion, if you change the oil every 3,000 miles, and don't drive it like you Want to blow it up, that all of the oils are about the same. BUT- that's just an opinion. Country

    Words of wisdom

Country Mav you are right on the money!
Oil is made to work hand in hand with the filter, and as long as you change them every 3000 you are making a small investment in your car or truck.

Does anyone know what the manufacturers recommends on changing your oil?

The 3000 miles I think is from the oil and filter people not the car builders but I’m not sure on this.

Oil and filters are like everything else, you get what you pay for. The better the oil or the filter the more it will cost.

    Pennzoil and Quaker State

BTW, Quaker State owns Pennzoil and they're both made in the same facilities.

I agree with everything that Mavman427 said.

Synthetic oil is the best, however you should have at leat 10,000 miles on your engine before using it, for proper break-in. I used to put Mobil-1 in a Nissan I had. It was only about $3.50 a quart and only required 4 quarts. Not that terribly expensive.

As for conventional oils; oil is OIL. It ALL has to meet the same specifications. I have used nothing but Penzoil in my 183,000 mile 302 and it has no sludge buildup in it.

The detergents and additives in oil are for the purpose of maintaining desired viscosity and reducing oil break-down due to heat and condensation.

As for filters, I don't know what the best is, but I have always used Motorcraft FL1-A for the most part.

If you change oil often enough, you should never have any problems, regardless of brand. How often depends on the amount and type of use the vehicle is subjected to...

    oil change intervals

Who has looked at thier owners manuals in the mav/comets? If I remember right, since the car is not at home now, the owners manual in the comet recommended oil change every 4000 and the filter every other oil change. If you get a chance look and see....I think that is correct...........Robert:)

Oil formulations have improved tremendously since our old cars were new. I've seen several tests lately where researchers have come to the conclusion that even "regular" oil only needs to be changed after 6,000 miles of normal service. More often if you tow, drive in extremely dusty areas, or do a lot of stop and go driving.

Hey guys, thought I would throw my .02 cents in here, since I work for one of the major Oil CO.s (Shell, which btw owns BOTH Pennzoil and Quaker State). One of the facilities I worked at did specialty blending and packaging of motor oils. I can tell you that just about all motor oils use the same identical base stock oil, and the only diffences are the additive packages. We had a 'recipe' for each oil...and we made it for Chevron, Exxon, Mobil, Shell, Unocal (I used to run Unocal 20W50 because I could get it for free), you name it, we made some of it! We didn't handle any synthetics, so i don't know about them. I agree with what somebody else said here, just pick one and stick with it, and with frequent oil and filter changes, life will be good!

Yeah, and Shell, which was originally a British company, is now owned by a Dutch company. Sheesh, I wonder who owns the Dutch company?

I worked for a Mobil distributor for a while too, and I remember hearing that all the major oil brands being the same base, with additives being the difference.

Partial synthetics are a waste of money, I have heard. Either go full synthetic, or full dino.

    .

Good to hear reports from guys that have heard it firsthand. While we knew regular oils were the same, it's just satisfying to hear it :).

Heck...I might as well jump in.

I have used Valvoline Semi-Senthetic. Great results. 235K on a ford Escort and still going (just sold it). Previously put 150K on a Ford Aspire and 198K on a Ford Tempo (I bought the Tempo new). None ever burned a drop of oil. Changed oil about once a month (about every 5,000 miles.....I drive a lot).
