In the olden days, you always had to make sure the coil terminals were at the bottom of the coil, if it was mounted horizontally, to make sure the connections were in the oil, so they would stay cooler. But since I've only had one 6 cyl Comet, I have no idea how they are mounted on a 200...
Phreeq's was mounted on the driver side of the engine block just below the valve cover. In a round holder like any other cylindrical coil would be mounted. It was horizontal, with the wires all facing forward. First thing I noticed when it wouldn't start was all the clear oil on the bottom of it. Then the crack at the top. I drove home, got my Accel SuperStock off my car, and put it on his, and it started right up. Then his car ate it two days later. The MSD Blaster2 I got to replace mine works great with the 6A box.
I'm running a Accel super coil, the big square one, with my points. Works great. Sounds like Phreeq's coil leaked all the oil out, and burned the windings up. Might have just been time for yours to go bad Scott, it might have also been low on oil. They don't hold a lot of oil anyway, the big square super coil I have was only half full when I broke the seals and opened it. I had bought it used for $5, and it wouldn't work, so I figured I had nothing to lose looking inside. Mine had a wire broke inside, soldered it back together and it works great now. Don't know if you can take the round ones apart or not, the square super coil is held together with four bolts/nuts.
The round ones have the tops crimped on. So yes, you could take it apart, but getting it back together may be a hassle. Phreeq just called. He bought a roller 5.0, on his way over for my engine stand, so this coil issue might be moot, soon.
I have mine mounted to an aluminum bracket I fabbed myself that's mounted to the driver's side head and waterpump, the coil itself is mounted upright(vertically) in a chrome coil bracket mounted to the aluminum bracket.
