A C-5 has the same insids as a C-4. The difference is that the C-5 is a heavier built trans. the way you can tell them apart is at a glance the C-5 tyhe dip stick goes into the pan. The second thing is the bell housing bolts do not hold the front pump in the trans like a C-4, they ar seperate. They were built for trucks and vans to take the place of the FMX. Quite a good trans, the only problam with them is the only have a big bell housing for a 163 tooth flywheel so it limits the places you can stuff them in. But as we all know, if there is a will there is a way!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! My last 71 Grabber had a 392 stroker W/ C-6 trans in it. S anything can be made to fit.
    Hope that helps

    Welcome!

Now that you let the cat out of the bag about your 71, you are required to post a bunch of pics! ;)

Go with the C4, unless you have giant HP... We changed out a 66 Stang, 289 four speed that went 8.20's in th 1/8, to a C6, and it went to running 9.20's. Lost a full second. But, on the juice it gained it back, and then some. They are tough, and you won't hurt one, but C4 tech has come along way.

OK, I hope I did this right and the pictures come out.
The car ran 7.37 at 94mph 1/8 mile, 11.94 at 114mph 1/4 mile w/ 1.71 60ft time. All on moter, no NOS or power adders. Probably one of the most consistant cars I have ever driven.
The 1969.5 is now on its way to the same level as the 71. I have a Mexican 351W complete engine that will be built soon to go in the place of the 200 I6. And yes there will be another C-6 in the car. When I ran C-4s in the 71 I went through about 2 a year no matter who built them. If you want more stats on the car let me know and I will give you a list.

Good luck getting a C6 to fit in the 69's trans tunnel without some work. The '69/'70 trans tunnel is smaller then 71 and up cars.

My c4 holds up to ALOT of abuse......i'd put it up against ANY C6. With that being said, you have to spend a ton of $$$ to get it there.(y)

    Well!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Lets just say, I got divorced, Re-married a woman 11 years younger than me and had 2 more children. So I let the car go to another Ford guy that was in the Air Force in trade for a 1990 Mustang GT and some cash. That was 5 years ago and have just now started to get back on my feet from the divorce and have found my new car a 1969 1/2 that will now bw transformed into another killer street machine. Got my disk brakes done this weekend and next weekend will be putting either an 8in in that I have from the doner 75 or find another 9in to go under it. A little at a time and it will be done before I know it. I may need some parts so you will see me on the parts wanted section.
    Thats my story

If you know a shop that can narrow a rear:

They can cut the axle tubes off your donor 8" and weld them onto a 9" housing center.
Makes it much cheaper than narrowing.
You get the stock width, original pinion angle, no moving spring pads, and best of all... You have no need to cut/respline axles as your 8" ers are just 28 spline 9" ers.
    Just a thought.
This is how Ford and Shelby did it for a couple years until a 9" was engineered specifically for the Mustang.
