This would issue a death warrant for most old cars. In many parts of the state, a dyno test is required during the emissions test. They simulate road conditions. I have serious doubts that many of these old cars would pass. We'd be subject to the same things as the newer cars. Smog technicians wouldn't like high performance intakes, exhaust, etc. I really don't think most of them would pass because either they're etensively modified and most smog equipment is gone, or the smog equipment is present but so old that most of it will be defective. I think I need to move to another state, this crap is ridiculous .
Mavman, I see your vehicle is a 71. Right now the law being proposed is to kill the 30 year rolling law (right now, every year a new year becomes smog exempt. For example, this year 74 and older is exempt, next year 75 and older will be exempt and so on. this law aims to say EVERYTHING 75 and older I think is the cutoff does NOT need to be smogged. Fortunetly that will save most of the muscle cars etc. However, that doesn't stop new legislation next year from smogging every vehicle. You never know. Hell, sometimes you here of crazy people trying to take ANY vehicle over 20 years old off the streets, period. They will always try, we will always fight back.
Cali guys question. If they test your car according to the year of the engine, even in an old car like a 1972 with a 1995 5.0, it must pass 1995 specs right? What do they do if you are using a Dart or Motorsport block and heads? Just curious what "year" they consider an aftermarket based engine.
That's a valid question. I am willing to bet that a dart block doesn't carry a carb exemption. If it doesn't, then it wouldn't be legal to run. A motorsport block likely would, and would probably be certified as to the year of production of that block. Boy this could be a mess
I really think they'd treat the old cars just like the newer cars, that's the whole point after all. If they saw a high performance intake, you'd fail. If they saw a big old monster carb or throttle body that obviously wasn't stock, fail. No egr, fail. No smog pump, fail. How many people have put new EFI 5.0's into their cars and made sure to install all of the smog equipment and kept everything stock. Im guessing next to nobody. If we have to smog our cars, we might as well forget about doing any engine upgrades, because it won't be allowed. And if that happens, that'll pretty much kill the hobby in my mind. Either that or I'll move to Barbados or something man, I can't handle all of these stupid California laws. You guys hear that bill that was proposed to give illegal aliens free college tuition at state universities? Unbelievable...
American Hot Rod What about carbuilders like Boyd Codington on Discovery Channel's: American Hot Rod? I don't recall seeing any "cats" or any other emission equipment on any of those rides. Surely the '56 Chevy they did doesn't come stock with a 502 BB. How do the emission laws apply to them when they make a car from scratch like the aluminum project car they are working on. Aren't they from Cali?
