I mean if the ignition switch just receives power from the battery side of the solenoid anyway, I'd rather just make my own circuit for power to the coil and KNOW it's getting there instead of going on a wild goose chase around the car trying to find the problem when I know this switch is screwed up
The switch in ebay link is NOS... Being as same one was used in '70 Torino GT & Cobra that had 351 Clevelands and 429 Cobra Jets, replacements are generally 5-10x that $30 price... This is one time a Mustang part isn't a direct fit, those are cheap... If you use correct trouble shooting there would be no wild goose chase... Without checking for power using that diagram I posted there is no way of knowing exactly what problem is...
It's not the firewall plug. I've checked every single point along the system. The only thing it could possibly be at this point is the switch. And my diagram is actually different from the one that was posted. My pink wire turns into a red with green stripe that then splices into a brown wire that goes from the solenoid to the coil
Yes red green wire feeds the coil(same as on diagram), the brown BACK feeds from solenoid to provide extra voltage while cranking... Otherwise it has no function... That's why it starts then dies in run position... A bad switch, break in wiring, bad firewall connection will all give same symptom..
Nothing more frustrating then a car at times especially when things just dont add up, I am an electrician by trade and automotive electrical still stumps me at times. The old saying about looking at it like a forest you cut one tree down at a time sees to sum it up. All anybody wants to do is help you and we realize not everybody's skill level is the same and many people would not even try to figure it out, so hang in there and there will be a light at the end of the tunnel.
Well dang. I guess my being 99 percent sure was greatly exaggerated. The switch has continuity from pink to black. It's my fuse block. It's rusted to nothing
Hmmm, the diagram doesn't show the pink wire passing through the fuse block. It apparently just passes through the firewall connector.
The pink wire ONLY goes TO the fuse block/firewall connector... On engine side it's a red/green wire, as shown on the wiring diagram I posted...
