I'm sorry, the real name of that carb in my picture is a Carter RBS - not a YFA (that is a different carb). I went back and edited my post to correct the error. And yes, they are pretty clearly marked. They also look completely different (see the big round fuel bowl on the RBS). His picture below, shows a YFA

There all well marked on the side. But you don't need to see the letters to spot a RBS - they look like this and are very different looking from other carburators. Maybe your car has something else on it?
You are right - I just looked at my carb charts and the RBS was discontinued after 1974 because of the new emissions for 1975. So Gene, your car wouldn't have the RBS. But it should say on the side what it is.
So lpolson and I probobly have the correct ones. This is good info to know for getting the correct carb or rebuild kit. BUT, it seems we could get the better RBS and it would work, correct?
If your carbs have their little tags - that is the right way to get a carb kit for it. Otherwise you are only guessing your car has the factory carb on it. As for swapping to an RBS, I know the heat riser tubes are diffferent, but I've never swapped one so I don't know what else you would need to change. Also, looking at the original pictures, there is a vent tube for emissions at the top of the float bowl. That is not found on the earlier carbs so you would need to change some hoses around too the way it looks.
could be wrong.... but aren't there different versions of the RBS? for example, one being the RBS IV that was stock on the 71 250. (Hey! that sounded kinda intelligent if I turn out not to be wrong!) lol
The paint on the carb indicates it was off an 1980 ford so obviously not the stock carb but hopefully the same type? I appologize for the dark pictures, most were taken in my basement where there is poor lighting.
Does it have the metal ID tag yet? It would be attached to a screw towards the top. If it does, it will ID the carb and it will tell you what it was removed from for sure. It will also aid in getting the correct kit for it. Look on the side of the carb - make sure it says it is a CARTER YFA If it is a YFA - I like Walker kits and the right kit for it is a 15681A - covers all YFA carbs from 75-80, 200 & 250 CID - that should cover you (if it is a YFA) O'Reillys has that Walker kit for $13.99 ......... If you do rebuild it yourself - best to have some help from somebody that has done carbs before. It is not that hard - but can overwelm a 1st timer with all the tiny parts and check valves.
Checked the carb out and heres all the info and numbers thats on it. MFD. BY CARTER FOR MOTORCRAFT MADE IN USA 2655 2624 7389S I dont see any mention of YFA?
Apperantly when the MOTORCRAFT name was added they stopped putting the model name on the body. But the number 7389S - is listed in my book as a YFA - so you will have the correct rebuild kit if you order the Walker 15681A
Excellent thanks for the help, I probably wouldnt have ever known the walker kit would work - let alone existed if it werent for you. For the time being i threw the carb back on as is to prevent moisture from getting into places it shouldn't be. I trust it more than the rags I had stuffed in there. Anyone have any idea how to tweak the screws on the carb to get it running smooth if thats a possibility?
