Hey scoop, before you do, go run a compression test on it first! Take all the plugs out, hold the throttle wide open and crank it a few times. record all the results. As to a cam choice, if the cyl pressure is 150psi and below, Id look for an "RV" cam just a little more than stock and will know a difference and drive it all the time. if the pressure is 185 or more then a larger cam profile will do better to make best power and torque for the cyl pressure/rpm and octane requirements will change, might cost more to drive, but it will make power. if its 150 psi or less, a big cam is gonna make it kinda lazy,,, all the race car parts, but not a race car,,, if you see my point,,, then it gets hairy from there. Trying to flow more air than what your cyl can draw in,, can make it erratic running, tempermental. Might get hot,, etc etc. So think of cyl pressure, rpm range, for the existing setup when looking at a better cam. Please note,,, cyl pressure, is only a place to give you an idea of what kind of octane and rpm it will run on the lowest requirements,,, these factors do change from a cranking engine to a running engine,, but it does give you a focus point to look at. Rednecking here we come! We've all done what we had to do with just the coins in our left pocket! Check out local shops, racers, anywhere an find a used cam or get a cheap new cam and lifters. For a band aid, I would not be looking at much more than stock or slightly larger cam. (you got the exhaust an car will still sound "healthy") Get your valve springs check, if in spec's reuse. With oil pan off, rinse, brush, flush engine out the best you can with diesel fuel. Catch it, paint filter strain with magnet, reuse it an flush, wash engine out the best you can. Put new cam, lifters with plenty of lube on, new oil pump throw a couple magnets in oil pan and button up engine. New oil with additive for cam filter an break in cam. After cam break in cool engine, next day take car out for a wine box run, come home drain oil, filter an replace. Don't forget to add cam additive with every oil change! Not the proper way of doing but a cheap, get through it way of doing it! You may also cuss me out, say how stupid this is an no way will you ever do it,,,, then behind closed doors after midnite (half box wine consumed helps) go ahead an do it! I won't tell! It's just a patch job, so don't go crazy an put more money in it then you half to. You wanna put the power back in it an open them 4 barrels up, your gonna have trouble! Don't have to granny it just not beat the snot out of it. Good luck Scott!
