Yea,I know, there goes my Escort too. However,a good friend of mine once had a low 10 sec '85 GT that he built mainly for the FFW True street event. His high $$ electric fan failed on the drive and it got over 260 dgrees .Because of that,I'll try & find 10-15 hp elsewhere. As far as as my idea of a street car,yea I'm pretty anal. But man it sucks when you get toasted by a largely stock LS1 F-body or GT Mustang that has all the amenities & probably gets 20+ mpg in a gutted, tractor geared loud a$$ "street"car .I just don't want to be the guy in said "street"car.JMO
I hear ya Tim,a fast but friendly street car isn't hard to build,my Comet has a electric fan but i only turned it on about four times this summer.I just have a well engineered cooling system. Also this winter i'm putting removable door bars in the cage, they really don't need to be there to go to cruise night.Derek.
i dunno about the electric fan thing, if i'm correct about 95% of the new cars on the road has electric fans.... and so do both of my cars.
This could be beat to death I think anyone with some real common sense can determine what the difference is between a real street car and a trailer queen, though technology has shaded the line some! I would have to say it's driveable on a daily basis or atleast half the week and has all the necessities to be deamed legal, wind shield wipers, heater and lights. The tire stipulation is financially motivated, who wants to waste a good pair of slicks and who wants to run one with any power on a set of true street radials ? I think the car should be driveable at a normal speed and on a consistent basis to be determined a street car. If you change tires at the track or drive around with them it doesn't mean it's not a street car. If you have deep pockets and can afford 1100 RWHP then God Bless ya brother, but realistically we all know when we look at someone else's ride if it's a street car or meant to go real fast in a straight line. just my .02
I think that what is considered a street car pretty much depends upon what you can put up with. I have a friend with a '68 Camaro, 427,306 enforcer cam, 3800stall, 5:13 geared and runs mid 11's...he considers it to be a street car(and it is) He drives it maybe 20 min around town and heads home...it is trialered to the track(about 20 miles away) uses race fuel and so on...but he is happy with it the way it is. My car runs low 12's, is driven to the track(even the far ones), has been in many a car show(has a few awards), has a full stereo(including subs, amps etc) and I even drove it down to Knotts Berry Farm last year to attend the Fabulas Fords Forever show(2500+mile RT) with no problems or glitches at all..and I run on 92octane! I never doubted for a second(well perhaps a tad) that I could make the trip! I consider this a street car plus! My Maverick my pride and joy and I find the drive is sometimes more enjoyable that the destination..it has never let me down! Which of these is the true street car? That all depends who you talk to.... (this is just my opinion... )
street car/pure strip? its all how ya look at it in your own mind. i have restored cars to 100 pts. before and never drove them is that a trailer queen, or a street car?, (the people that bought them took delivery at great lakes dragstrip!) i have hacked cars up to run the quarter, and drove them to the track, is that a street car? this is and will always continue to be the perennial pain in the a** question among rodders, purists, and restorers.where does this end? it dont, but thats what makes building anything what it is...enjoyable. theres always gonna be bench racing, smack talkin, and who knows what...but if the world were to come to its finale today, id have to say, id be ok in that respect... just plain enjoyed what i did! this website does not claim to support the opinion or actions of the previous post. thank you.
Ok rub it in!! So we only get 3 months of 85-95 degree weather. So cold here right now Niagara falls damn near froze over!! i wasn't trying to sound like a smart a** but after a few years of battling overheating problems with my 1964 Big block Pro street pick up i kinda learned a few tricks along the way,and applied them to the Comet and have zero cooling issues as a resault.I'm sure if i had 12:1 compresstion and a alot more gear etc,etc..i would have to go back to the drawing board but as it sits i'm happy with it.Derek.
