Did the factory every make a mistake?

    70 Maverick Grabber, 72 Maverick Grabber Restomod
    My 70 has an extra digit in the VIN code that was stamped into the engine block and transmission. Caused all the other (matching) numbers to get moved over one place in the sequence. I sent a letter to Ford customer service about it, and they told me that mistakes like this happened all the time "back in the day".
