I watched the show - saw the Mavericks (and Mustangs). There are a lot of great shows on the History channel.
Unfortunately the Maverick assembly line segment talked about the poor quality manufacturing that was being done at the time in the Frame Shop .... I didn't notice any Grabbers .... must have missed it.
I thought that the rear shot of the car driving off the line showed a spoiler - figured it was a Grabber, but it didn't have a blacked out taillight panel. Must have been a standard. There were some inconsistencies with their dates - they talked about Detroit ignoring the pending gas crisis in the late 70's - I think they meant in the late 60's, as it was here by the early 70's. Also said that the woman joined Ford (her name was also Ford) in 1978 - she was working in the frame shop. But all the time they were talking about the bad quality, they were showing all the Mustangs and Maverick bodies on the line. I think she was there well before 1978 to have worked on these. At least the comparison between Japan and US cars was accurate. the Japanese cars forced US manufactureres to produce quality - or at least attempt to make a better car.
Id like to see it, can someone send it to me the maverick part via email/ftp? Pleaes let me know how big that portion is.
Ford Production I have 29 years at Ford Wayne Assembly Plant. Maverick was built there in 1974 only. I was in the plant, trim department, in April of '74 and saw new Mavericks as they were being built and driven off final line! I didn't notice anything different from any of the cars that we have built through the years. Many of you know I ordered a red/black "74 Maverick Grabber in May of '74. I owned it until 8/'88. I bought a white/black '74 Grabber in 8/'02 that is orginal, unrestored with some engine performance upgrades and Cragars. I have won many awards! I also had a '74 Maverick 4door I used for work for many years. I think thats very good American quality.
Damn, you may have seen my '74 Grabber roll off the line new! According to the 999 history report it was produced April 6, 1974 at the Wayne Assembly Plant.
Having this '73 in my driveway has really stirred up alot of attention from all the retired Ford guys in my neighbourhood, since were about 10 minutes from the St.Thomas plant, too bad my newest car was built in Kansas, my neighours best buddy was looking for his quality control stamp, but was dissapointed. He was telling me that it was interesting when Mavericks were built, because there were so many different colors, all mixxed up, in no order, not like the Crown Vics they build now, he said they might do 20 white ones in a row.
When we toured the Taurus plant in Hapeville, it was the same way. Diffrent colors going down the line. Silver, White, Red, Blue, Green, Black, you name it. Guess I should say the old Taurus plant now...
