is there a way to verify if its a gt without a marti report? does the vin number have a specific number letter or sequence?

the reason for the post is Im working on a deal for a 72 comet gt thats supposed to be in really good condition upgraded with disc brakes (or did the 72 gt come with disc brakes?) did the gts only come with v8's ?

My 71 GT had chrome drip rail moldings and only had 53k miles on it when bought from the original owner. I'd say it came from the factory that way. - Matt

Except for the graphics the GT is nothing more than a std Comet, power train options are same, most probably had 6 cyl... Unlike the Grabber, nothing IDs it as a GT but all Fords do have a engine code in the VIN... No disc brakes on any Mav/Comet till '74 model year...

ok thanks for the info IM trying to get the car for a really good price and want as much bargaining power as I can get . I dont necessarily want or need the drive train but the seller is reluctant to sell the car without it.

the car will cost me more than Ive ever paid for a comet but if its a no bondo no rust car thats been painted already Ill try to come home with it. I go next weekend to look at it and maybe bring it home pending pics early next week

    Shhhurrree :D

Even if it's a GT, if it needs too much work, it wouldn't be worth much imho. At least I wouldn't want to pay the extra just because it's a GT. Like any and probably all these cars. You put more money in them then you will ever get back. Although they sit undriveable, for this reason, I can't see me selling my two now. There like stock.. Only not :comet:

Not sure.. I am thinking people take them off. Some intend to put them back but they don't make it back on for whatever reason.
I am going to look at my rails to see if there is any evidence of them.

Doesn't make sense, that the luxury line car, wouldn't have the extra chrome as an option, like the wheel opening chrome, I've seen way more Comets with it compared to Mavericks (which it wasn't available on Grabbers)
Does anyone have a factory Mercury trim book, or some order forms? That would tell you.
