if you are putting it 90 degrees to the old hole, it doesn't matter...

    Yes, steel gear.

And it is the vertical location of where they drill the hole that I am worried about, not the location in relation to the teeth. I don't care where around the gear they put it, just that it is within .005" of where it is supposed to be from the bottom of the gear.

If you are worried about deck height of the dist.( or up and down slack), The best way i found to check it is, Bolt down dist., Pull up to FEEL slack,(Be sure you are feeling the shaft slack and not the advance slack,If necessary remove the advance mechanism ,then use the dial indicator if unsure)If there is none (.005 or what ever you feel safe with) Remove dist. remove gear and bottom spacer (the other thing with the roll pin Thur it) Mill .005 off spacer (each time)till slack is what you feel you need. Remember though too much slack can and will cause timing to jump around.( what Ive always called spark scatter) This scenario is not good on a BLOWER motor. P.S. If the timing cover is not on yet ,you can measure the slack rite at the gear.P.S.S. My hat is off to you for looking at things most people never even think of.
