I had a 79 Bronco that would do that only not that consistant. Turned out to be a rubber hose under the truck on the fuel line. Factory pinch clamps were on it still and it would suck air. New piece of hose and screw clamps cured the problem. Took me awhile to find that one.
...fuel...not fuel... ...electrical...not electrical...huummmm!!!! i guess my work is cut out for me today... grabber71, i have heard about the "low fuel and trash" thing before. what i don't understand about that is...the fuel pickup is on the bottom of the tank and picks the fuel up there all the time. it's not like it is on a float and goes up and down with the fuel level. . maybe if it is a floating piece of trash but "rust and dirt" no. dennis, i will look at the lines, i have the pinch clamps also. thanks everyone...frank... p.s. i still don't know why it only does it once in a while...
pertronix has the gm module..tighten the module mounting bolts, and look REAL close to the pickup coil wires for breaks..the vac advance bends these wires to death. IF you can curve the dist for mechanical advance only...that eliminates the pickup wire breakage..HTH
simple solution........i had the same exact problem and i actually got it don to a science.here are your options 1. live with it (didnt think so) 2. buy an MSD complete ignition system....i did...and now i have zero problems but seriously..........i replaced the stock coil and put a MSD blaster coil in it and remounted it on the apron panel..... the only thing i figured out was that the vibration from the engine was making the coild rattle around and causing a short in the coil.... once i replaced the coil and all that it stopped......then about 6 months later i replaced the entire ignition system and it has never shut off since hope that helps but yeah..........the MSD system is AWESOME
71gold: OK Now! Did You find the problem? Did You fix it? If so what was the Problem? Don't leave us hanging!
Thank you Tom. We should all probably look back at our own 'problem' posts and update with the results. If I ever get any of mine resolved, I may just do that!
Rich: Just stay on Your meds and your problems will just go away!:evilsmile The thing is I'v seen it way too many times that someone asks for help, and as we all know ,there are a bunch of good and well meaning guys and gals that provide some advice (be it right or wrong) to the person asking. Then if that person who asked in the first place gets the car going or what ever, just does not take the time ( i guess) to say "Yep! That did the trick" Ya know kinda like putting in 13 quarts of tranny fluid! Oh well!:chillpill
o.k. boys and girls, i took the pertronix out and put the points back in...still shut off but would crank itself back up before i could get it out of gear... put the pertronix back in and bought a new dist...it hasn't shut off yet but comming down the interstate today running about 85mph it missed about three times but didn't shut off...it has gone two weeks without doing it so that is why i didn't post.."a fixed reply"....thanks for asking...frank...
What color are the sunvisors? I heard if they are the wrong color, your car will stall all the time. I'm just being a dumbass. Don't mind me.
tom, i bought a new coil but am waiting to see if it does it again. i didn't want to change but one thing at a time....this way i will know what the prob. was....maybe...frank...
Frank- I hope you get it all ironed out soon. I know how irritating electrical issues can be. And you are right about doing it one thing at a time. I made the mistake of changing my coil, upgrading to Crane Cams ignition, switching intakes, installing a 4 bbl carb and replacing a wire or two--- ALL AT THE SAME TIME!! Not smart. I was ready to sell the car by the time I got it all straight. Not to mention the fact that I let a buddy of mine who is supposedly a great mechanic work on it with me. All kinds of fun. Anyway, I'll stop rambling now. Good Luck!! Preston
Mine did the same thing as yours, I replaced 4 ign. modules, and it always started doing the same thing. We then changed it back over to a 74 model points system distributor (did away with the module and elect. ign. and all is just fine now, I was told later, cheap modules from auto zone will not last long, and you have to get the OEM from Ford, if you can.
