So what does a 40 year old perch look like?

I have 49 year old perches and they don't make any noise. I grease them about every 30,000 miles.

The spring perches are what causes the squeak on my car. I shoot PB Blaster at them every now and then and it quietens them down for a while. Mine are only 2 years old.

Now I *think* we're getting somewhere...

So if I stuff 90% of a 50 year old dead perch into the non-greaseable muffler bearing and charge the flux capacitor until it "wallers out" the loose nut behind the wheel it will stop the paint from squeaking?

Groovy... maybe I'll try to do that this weekend. :D

Seriously... thanks guys... now I know WHERE to start hunting.

Next question to maybe fuel this thread some more and make your brains hurt is why the hell is it ALWAYS the passenger side and not drivers? Mum had 67-68 Cougars, Mustangs, and of course my Comets. Always seems to be the passenger side.

Well if that sums it up...what about the sqeak that I hear near the rear package tray? possibly in the trunk as well, also on the passenger side?

Noooo Jamie don't do that:naughty:. the solvent in the sprays like wd40, pb blaster, liquid wrench and others eat away at the rubber bushings. if u do use anything use lythium grease spray theres nothing in it that ruins bushings. I ruined a complete set of bushings with pb blaster had to buy a complete rebuild kit:mad:. a 2 dollar fix will cost you 200 in the end of it all.:tiphat:

You might want to inspect the panel at the top of the shock absorber. I had a car that I used to run air shocks on and it developed a crack and would squeak like hell while driving. Check it real close around the top shock mounting hole. The weight of the car going up and down would make the cracked metal rub back and forth. It cracked on the same side you are talking about too. I have also heard others on this board describe the same problem.

My point exactly those perches are not factory none ever came with grease fittings not designed to be greased the are vulcanized rubber in a steel sleeve.

CJ, they may or may not have been "designed" from the factory to be lubed. however, my grandfather was a ford mechanic in the late 60 until the 80s and he is the one that told me to take out the little bolts and shove grease in there, also stated that ford instructed the mechanics to lube that spot to stop the squeak. the tech guys apparently came up with screwing in the aftermarket zerks because it saved the mechanics having to keep removing and reinstalling the little bolts. Jamie, i agree with rusty as plastics and rubbers get eaten up and destroyed by penetrants.

I don't really care if they get eaten up. I'm going to put a set of roller perches on it sometime soon. I just want them to be quiet for now.

Ford designed the front end to use grease in the perches. Some bean counter came around late '63 decided to use rubber instead of brass. All 60-62 and most 63 Comet/Falcons had grease fittings perches.
