Just remember, gas fumes are lighter than air so you dont want them to collect anywhere. Thats why they are normally vented through the gas cap on older models. Easiest to hook the carbon canister back up. It dosent rob any HP.
I always wondered why they ran the vent tube all the way up to a canister in the front of the car instead of just putting it up above the rear end somewhere.
