Were the spark plug wires ever replaced? My first car was a 65 Mustang and in 1977 it still had the original wires. If it got too humid (not raining, just sweaty) the car would die at a 50 mph cruise. Hit the starter and it would fire right up ... I got so used to it, I could do it on the roll. Changed the 12 year old wires and it never did it again. Barring that, most old cars need ground connections cleaned up ... loose or cruddy.
I'd be betting on a loose/corroded connection to the ignition system or possibly worn ign switch... I have seen failing Duraspark boxes die suddenly then be fine again on restart...
Thanks everyone. Well, I now know it wasn't the neutral safety switch. Someone eliminated it before I owned the car. I'm using a duraspark distributer. Tried moving all the wires around under the hood and it never died. Gonna try a new condensor and plug wires. Then take the ignition switch back apart and check connections. If thats all good then I guess it's chasing down bad grounds.
I had this problem on my Maverick with a 302. Mine ended up being the Hall switch (Stator) in the distributor.
