Oh I am SO doing this. That sounds like about $20 at a junkyard. My 83 F150 has that stuff in it. I'd have to install the new dizzy though and I have never done such a thing.
    Lifes a learning experience.

just make where your rotor is/was when u pull the dizzy, and install the new one in the same position. same for the dizzy itself. then just readjust your timing accordingly. like Jamie said, it's pretty easy :)

    Pertronix

Pertronix---3 years on mine and no troubles. It's not a daily driver though--------averaging about 2K miles a year.

if your altinator is starting to go bad it will create voltage spikes. the battery usually does a good job of asorbing them. some times the spikes will damage ignition moduels. thats why some people have problems with pertroincs and unilites.

My Comet is my only car and is a daily driver, not that I go places or anything. But when I do it is in the Comet. I need dependable and reliable and not fussy.

points are probly the most dependable and reliable. they do require replacement semi ferquently. they should not leave you stranded. in your situation i would get the pertronics or the duraspark. its not a big deal to swap the distrubtor. all you need is a 1/2" wrench and a timing light. put the motor on top dead center for cylinder #1. note wich way the rotor is pointing. i make a mark with a sharpi on where its pointing. remove the the hold down for the distrubtor. now slowly pull up on the distrubtor. if it wont come up a liile leverage from a screwdrive will pop it loose. now pay atention to where the rotor rotates to as you pull up. when it stops rotating you should note that location. oh also note where the vaccume advance is pointing. now pull the dist all the way out. be carefull here. the oil pump dive shaft some times sitcks in the bottom of the distrubor. if you see it grab it. they have a habit of falling off back down the hole and into the oil pan. if that happens you can get a magnet on bendable stick from home depot to fish it out with. now put the new dist. in the hole, you mave have take afew stabs to get the oil pump shaft to line up with the dist. line up the marks you made and put it all the way in. now you can put the cap rotor and plug wires on. hook up the eletronics. start the motor and set the timeing.

Come to think of it, I think I did this on a slant six a decade or so ago. Wasn't hard.
I think I'm going to go for the Dura Spark. That seems the cheapest way to go other than points of course.
