yea it'll work but you have to wire in the ignigtion module too im in the oppsite situation where i have the ignigtion module stock but my new engine has a points distributor
If an electronic ignition breaks down it is time to walk but with points it is easy to fix right there. That is why I prefer points on a street car. The best milage and power I ever got was with points - before electronic ignitions were used much. Back then you used points or a magneto.
I have three running Mavericks. They are all street cars and they all have points distributors in them. Two are 302s and one is a 250 six. They run just fine and get 20 - 22 mpg. If I was running them at 6000 rpm or racing them I would go with the DuraSpark and keep a spare. I have a 66 Mustang that is a "fun car" for short cruises and I have both kinds of distributors for it. I haven't made up my mind yet because I won't be racing it. (other than the ocassional Chebby killing)
I carry a spare $17 dollar HEI module that's barely bigger then a lighter. If something goes wrong, it's a matter of plugging 4 wires into it and off you go. Now if it's the pickup in the distributor, those usually give you somewhat of a warning before going out, and they are also a cheap, in stock item at most auto parts stores.
Yep, the main reason I changed from points to a Pertronix was because I had a nitrous system and points aren't recommended with nitrous because of point bounce and spark scatter issues. When I ran points I used the Echlin heavy duty, would rev to 6500 rpm easily. Had to keep an eye on the rubbing block for lubrication 'cause the stiffer spring would wipe the lube off of the distributor cam.
is it a difficult swap and does the ignition module work on points? so could i just keep the points distributer in the trunk and if something did happen how long would it take to swap them out?
if you did have to swap back to points i think you would have to wire the coil right to the points dizzy and bypass the moduel all together
