I have had only two fuel stops and based on this preliminary information I'm getting 9.2 mpg. The engine is obviously not stock due to modifications by the previous owners. Might have to consider rebuilding another 302 that I know is more fuel efficient. It would also help if I had 2 more gears instead of just 3!
I am not stock, but I also don't have anything outrageous done. I get about 8 mpg's and that is why I have a Toyota pick-up truck as a daily driver. 302 cubic inch engine bore 0.030 over New cam bearings and galley plugs Brass freeze plugs Crank ground .010 - .010 Clevite 77 bearings Keith Black hypereutectic pistons Sealed power, single moly ring set Lunati bracket master II cam and lifters - 284 degree duration .488 lift advanced 4 degrees CompCams dbl roller timing set Edelbrock valve springs Stock rockers Stock heads(valve jobbed and exhausts ported) Summit stage II dual plane intake Summit 650 CFM vacuum sec. carburetor Melling hi-volume oil pump Pertronix electronic ignition MSD blaster coil Ford Cobra valve covers Accel wires Hedman headers Magna Flow exhaust C-4 trans with big Billet servo and blue bands Hughes 2800 stall converter TransGo stage II shift kit B&M megashifter Ford 9" rear end(non-posi)
Even with me struggling to get my car tuned totally right, I'm getting around 18mpg on my 35 mile commute to work with traffic and also 70mph freeway speeds. I'm running a completely stock 302 w/ original 2bbl carb, stock points ignition/ignition coil, stock exhaust/headers and stock gears. It won't be mistaken for a rocketship, but she's ok in my book.
My goal is to get to 15-18 mpg. I discovered that the vacuum tube was removed that goes from the distributor to the carburetor. They had them capped off. So I replaced that yesterday. I get the feeling it's going to be a lot of little things that will add up or at least that's my hope.
