I need a cam, intake, overbore, posi and a rebuilt transmission. Then all would be smoke and noise.

Mo doing a burn out at the track is a waste of time with regular street tire. When you peel out on a street tire it gets greasy and you will find that your traction will be worse. What you will want do is to try to drive around the waterbox then do a real short burn out just enough to scrub off any dirt or gravel.

    fog machine would help, na....

Just remember to let off the brake when you see smoke in the mirror and mash the gas

    Yep...
I cringe watching folks doing a burnout with the brakes on.
If you need to do that, get a line-lock.

:hmmm:...if you need a...line lock...to do a burnout... then what is the need to do a burnout to start with... if you don't have the HP to spin the tires then why do you think you need to heat up the tires?...:rofl2:

If your track preps its surface well, you probably won't need any burnout. It is not like driving around on greasy streets.

Like mentioned, drive around the water box ... treads in street tires will hold some water and carry it to the line with you. Even in a car that does use the water box, you really need to keep the front tires out of it ... drive around and back into it. Wet front tires, not good.

I usually do 2 or 3 dry hops before getting to the line.

My car is an automatic, and after I get to the line, I typically will hold it at about 1500 rpm against the brakes to get the motor up on the torque converter a bit (my convertor is rated at a 2200 stall speed).

Our track prep here is about as good as it gets, and if it spins at all, it is for about half of one turn of the tire.

This was with a 4.62 locked rear and street tires. Out on a regular blacktop street, this same car would burn the tires all the way through first and 3/4ths the way through second gear.

PS ... burnouts are FUN! ;) If that is what you are after, great. Probably won't NEED it at the track. You'll probably want to though ... especially if you go out in an early round and get to come back for some time runs.

Me too. I just put that in this week.

The line lock (or brake) is needed if you don't want to move during the burnout. That is street or track. Sure, I can mash the gas and break the tires loose, but it will not be a "controlled burnout" as originally asked in the question. The car will start to move, both sideways and forward, and it may bite the road or track at any point and launch forward, depending on road conditions and terrain. So without the linelock to hold the car steady, any other burnout would not be "controlled" as I think the author of this thread was intending to use the word.

Not entirely true. I had a set of Grand Am tire on my GTO and it would spin of the line and into second just a little. The best I was running was 12.15 like that. On my last run I decided to do a nice hairy burn out to take some life off the tires so I could justify some Drag T/As plus we thought it would make some good video.:thumbs2: That turd hooked like never before and clicked off a 12.90 pass.

I do have to agree with jou pn the water box. If you plan on using it don't let the frant tires near it, they will just put water on the track ahead of the rears.

WOW! Almost added a second. That is a great improvement...:D Most of us are actually trying to LOSE time at the drag strip. You might do even BETTER if you drop in an old beat up 6 cylinder to replace that V8.

I am assuming you meant 11.90, but couldn't pass up an opportunity to tease you.

If you do it right you get something like this.
