If you put a hose in the rad and keep them cool they can go for 5 or more minutes . Sometimes they make windows sometimes they just slowly slow down until they stop . 6 cylinders seem to just slow down and die quietly . The longest I seen was a 350 olds . It went for so long everyone got bored and walked away . I guess if the valvesprings are bagged enough they will run forever . Anything can happen I guess . I should try some ricer engines and see what they are like . I have a old chevy halfton that is ready for the boneyard ,maybe we should start a pool and see who is closest ?
Morbid..I agree. I have always had an extreme guilt trip about sending a car to the boneyard, and feel guilty about the 5.0 stang I am junking, this thread made me feel a lot better. I have sent 0 mavericks to the junkyard. Mine has had a foot in for 15 years now, and I am the sole person keeping it out.
Well, I saved two and sent the 4-door LDO Maverick to heaven "kinda" My two-door came home for $500, smoked up the entire neighborhood (good mosquito control) with a run-out 250cid six. Rebuilt the six, ran it, finally put in a V8 and it is a keeper. The 4-door LDO car I found on Ebay for $120, drove to Abeline, TX to pick it up for a parts car and brought it back to Houston. Got on the phone and called every local Maverick guy I knew to come get parts off of it (DAB, Rick ya hearing this! (grin)). Finally, when it was a bare shell, I called Heaven and they sent down an angel with a car hauler to take it away to where all Mavericks should go when they get tired... Doug's House!
I have sent two to the yard so far, both were parts cars. One 72 two door that had hit a pole, and a 76 4 door that had just seen to many days of salt on the road she was a goner. On the 4 door there were only the two back bolts in the front seat that was holding the seat inplace the front two were gone from where the floor pans had rusted out.
my 71 mav is my first and only maverick so far. Although i wish i had a few more mavericks for parts cars. I am one of 3 in Parkersburg W.Va., this includes running or not, Fortunately, mine runs. The 3 that are here all run. And the junkyards and salvage yards are cleaned out of maverick parts, i'm still contemplating if thats good or bad . I hope my mav can stand strong when i can finally drive alone (on a learners permit, 15 yrs old) so i'l be on the roads and on my own in about 4 months..woohoo! Austin 1971, All Original, exception to the 4-lug Carrol Shelbys' she's on, ain't she a beauty?
Its funny how its cheaper to buy a whole car then to buy just a few parts. I bought a 69.5 Mav for $50 and got lots of goodies off that. I picked up a 79 Lincoln Versailles for $100 and I scored an amazing deal on an 89 Mustang 5.0L 5spd for $300 but sold 3 tires and the seats for $50! So I have collected a complete drive train, 9" rear with disks and all my small bumper parts etc for $400Cdn!!! I am sticking to a strict budget and I'm doing better then expected! Those cars all rest in pieces now.
I've sent 4, all two doors. 2 small bumper and 2 big bumpers. By the time they left the yard there was nothing worth taking off of them. The first one was a 77 that I drove home when I was 15. I took it apart and never put it back together. What a shame, that was a nice car . O'well, chalk that one up to being dumb and getting in over my head with a restoration. Russ
thats where im at with mine, the 69.5 may not make it much longer.. the garage needs a change of scenery
A stripped 74 Maverick 4 dr no motor tranny or rearend and the body was destroyed and I am about to strip my 1973 4 dr comet I am keeping the motor tranny rearend and maybe some of the front suspension. The bodt is terrible the top is burnt and crushed in. I would never crush a good car even if it is a 4 dr
