Nice car! You called it a sedan, but technically that would refer to a 4 door ... you have a coupe there. If that has airshocks, odds are it is a crutch for saggy rear springs ... most all of these cars have them, (they are on my to-do list), so be prepped to make improvements there. Do a search,... there a number of good options out there, including making your own out of van springs.
Hey Thanks for the clarification, I"ll go with coupe... I will let the air out of thos shocks and see how far she falls, if its bad I'll see about purchasing some new ones. Does Eaton springs carry them? anyway, I'm still curious about the rear being a trac-loc, and what gears it might have. is there a website where I can see what different gear ratios came with the versailles? and any distinguishing marks or codes on it that may signify what it is? thanks
Eaton will make you a set also www.generalspringkc.com sells them, and they give a discount for being a member here. the rear end ratios in those were between 2.40:1- 3.0:1, which are fairly high. But more than likely the previous owner swapped in a lower gear set, or even another third member. Look for a metal tag on the front carrier. IT might not be there though. So here's the trick to figure out gears you have:
To investigate the axle further, jack the car up and get both rear wheels off the ground. Use jackstands for safety. If you can turn one rear tire, and the other rotates in the opposite direction, it is NOT posi. If they turn the same direction, it is. You can calculate the gear ratio while it is up too. Mark the driveshaft near the pinion and mark a tire. It helps to have an assistant here. Rotate the driveshaft manually and count how many times you have to turn it in order to make a rear tire rotate 10 times. Then divide the driveshaft turns by ten and you should have a very close approximation to what is in there, right down to the decimal point.
Hey I wont know for a few more days... The car is in North Carolina and I'm in New York...it's being delivered soon though. Wow, That General Spring website is nice and Waaaaaaaaaaay cheaper than Eaton... General gets $109 per spring and Eaton gets $260 per spring.. and you said they even offer discounts to members of this site? nice!
that was my bad i just checked and they don't , but still $109 is cheap! the owner is a member here though he goes by "kansasjoe" http://mmb.maverick.to/showthread.php?t=66507
Very nice car and well worth the price. I looked for along time too and they are going up in price around here too. looks like a little surface rust here and there and you done. How does it handle? I really like the disc brakes all the way around it.
It handles ok for an old car... Goes straight down the road but really have to push down on the brake pedal... Maybe it needs a power booster? Have to check it out further. Has good power, previous owner said motor was rebuilt high performance but has no specs... Thanks for the kind words about the car
your car has no booster, they weren't an option til 75. You really dont need it, especially now that your car has all disc's. I bet it just needs a fluid bleed to fix the pedal problem.
thanks guys, for all the posts ... once I have the car in my possesion I will take some close up pics of the rear and see what I have here... glad you guys created this forum, without your help I would be in the dark.... talk to you guys in the threads!
