ah, the thread that wont die any predictions how many more pages this hits before it falls off the front page?
well, i havent had a problem cornering yet in the bay area or here in the sierras. gas mileage can be attained if you set it up for that, and so can cornering with a 6 or 8. i think my straight six actually cornered and handled worse because the front was too light.
i think we have a bit of a generation gap here.. among other things old vs. young views (how about put your age with your view) east coast vs west coast. (where do you live) opened minded vs. stubbornness. (enough said.. think about how your maverick is viewed most of the time.) nothings gonna change so hate me this comment ain't gonna stir up anything maybe me and thomas can build one and piss everyone off. i'll leave you with this and i'll shut up! just remember this someone will always be faster then you! mavericks are the most liked cars either. fast cars always fall apart eventually! its called rebuild... nothing will last as long as a stock car! btw you can build an import or 4 banger to go about just as fast as a V8 for about the same price... times have changed!.. remember when aftermarket heads for SBF were an arm and a leg.... yep..... import performance parts are very close to the price of a small block ford. so if you wanna fund it i'll build it! you'll hate me more!
My point is most are saying not to do a 4 cylinder becuase they are slower in the 1/4 mile in my opinoin that's not the reason for a smaller engine. To say that more weight makes a car handle better..........well I have no responce to that other than all race car strive to be lighter for a reason. Mileage out of a v8 or 6 is fine Tammy's maverick gets 14-16 city and we have got up to 25 freeway with the cruise on (345hp 302 3.73 gears & a 5 speed). Give a reason why this isn't good, slower in the 1/4 isn't a good reason, because it isn't ford doesn't work, jap is crap doesn't work, the 4 cylinder engines are to tall works, it will take alot of wiring and time to get it in and running works, it would be cheaper and easier to run a 6 or v8 works, BTW I'm 41 live in the west coast and I think I'm open minded
Slower in the quarter is a good reason (in my opinion). Because it isn't a Ford is a good reason (in my opinion). Jap stuff isn't necessarily crap but I'm not fond of it. Therefore, good reason (in my opinion). Four cylinder engines are too tall.....don't know/don't care. No opinion. Takes a lot of time and wiring to get it to work....probably. Never stopped me before but...whatever. No opinion. Cheaper and easier to run a 6 or V8 is a good reason (in my opinion). I'm 40; live in Texas; closed-minded, drag race oriented, no-corner turning, hate roundy-round racing, bleed-Ford-blue, evil, wicked, mean and nasty. :evilsmile But hey.....that's just me. The original post asked "what do you think". That's what happens when you ask for opinions or "what do you think". This is also one of the things that make this site so much better than 97% of the car sites on the net. Diversity. Smile Thomas....it'll be ok.
I'm 43, but have to count myself as "young" (if only in mind and spirit) I was born and raised in So. Cal, but now live in the boonies I'm WAY openminded I love straight-line performance, but living in the boonies, with all it's twisty roads, corner turning performance is also a requirement (and fun!) Now, here's a BIG deciding factor in what I build........I'm poor I've got nothing against imports, have even owned a few, and imports perform decent enough out of the box, and handle very well without much mods, and they serve their purpose well, but when I get a jones to beef something up, I tend to go with classic lines, V-8 power, and the K.I.S.A.S "Keep It Simple and Affordable Stupid" method. Swapping and import motor into a Mav is lots and lots of headaches to end up with something I could acheive with a simple 302 V-8. And the "better milage VS. difficulty and cost of swap" doesn't balance out for me. I could spend several thousand dollars, and nearly equal thousands of hours getting a foreign import to fit and work properly in my Maverick, and end up getting good milage, but I could also get pretty damned close, maybe even better, with a good ol' 250 straight 6 or even a V-8 with a LOT less trouble and TONS less money. My opinions here aren't about whether Imports suck or not....it's about putting an import motor in a Maverick. And my simple answer is "Why?, when you can acheive all the desired results, whether it be milage or performance, and can get the same, even better results with a lot less time, headaches and money invested building a much simpler, cheaper and less time consuming American powerplant/American chassis combo. But, in the end, it's up to the individual.......if you got the time, money and ingenuity it takes to stick an import motor in your Mav, and that's what'll get your ya-ya's off, by all means, go for it. More power to you. But likely, there'll be another Maverick pulling up besides yours sometime, that's as fast or faster, gets near the same milage, has been on the road for years while yours was in the garage getting all the swap bugs worked out, and ended up being done as good or better overall for a lot less money, and just as much fun, and satisfaction and pride for a well-built car. An import motor in a Maverick?? I think Spock said it best..... "That's highly illogical"
Your killing me shadow master The new car I'm working on will have a street boss I've always wanted to build one no other reason. If some one puts a 4 cylinder or v6 or LS1 why would I care, I wouldn't belittle anyone with any kinda motor in thier car, except chevy 350's. I have the total respect for someone willing to try any combination what ever the reason might be. you say why? I say why not?
LS1.....that reminds me. There's a guy around Houston who's doing an LS1-Fox Mustang Coupe project. Think the website is www.ls1mustang.com. Should be interesting....even if he should be burned at the stake.
What exactly is "about as fast" or "about the same price as a v8"? 2 abouts in the same sentence can equal a BIG difference to the big picture! You covered your butt well by putting those 2 words in there... I won't proceed to flame. If you had left those out, you would have me laughing hesterically... Dave
Off topic, but in the same vein... This is what I consider an imaginative swap: Fiero GT fitted with an LS1... Been done folks... That swap takes brains and balls, then ends up with a product that everyone can admire. If they took that Fiero and put an I4 Toyota in it, you would get the same response as putting it in a Mav: Why!?! Not everyone likes GM, Fieros, or LS1s, but it makes sense. Not everyone likes FoMoCo, Mavs, or SBFs, but they make sense. Btw: I am 36, WM, conservative, and Southern by the grace of God. I am open minded... I like FoMoCos, GMs, and Mopars! What else is there?!?
Hey nothing wrong with putting a four cylinder in a maverick. Just as long as you put two 2.5L in there:evilsmile If you ask for opinions You should be "Man" enough to hear them. EVerybody here can wave what ever flag they want, it doesn't matter to me. I would like to point out though that top fuel dragsters do not use 4 cylinders and 4 secs in the 1/4 is mighty impressive. Lets see an import do that Strait line or in circles. 28 Yoa, open minded ,but traditional value oriented. Bleeds True Blue.
hmmm how bout what do the faster F-1 twistey turney cars(which i love to watch) run as their mainstay engines? most are 8 10 or 12 cyl and a very fast in a straight line too. if you want a japanese engine or a jet engine its your car. 36, ex cali, mountain living, moderately conservative, fairly open minded, but CWM, mav driving maniac.
what i mean is no car is going to run exactly the same even if they it was the same car and same motor. right? or does that sound like i'm still hiding under a shell what i mean is "about" meaning a cost that probably woundn't really matter since you would have spent a crack load anyways! seeing the way the cost of things are now and from what i have seen at my work... for turbos, pistions, rods, boost controlers, Fuel management systems etc.... to about 1k in differance. to me 1k ain't nothing when you total up how much you spend on a car. and about how fast well i don't like to bench race but like i said if you wanna lose let me know then you race my maverick and beat that instead ok on to another story.... i know some of you have heard me talk about this car... but here it is again.... the neon i drive once in awhile at work runs 13.4 (yes at a track) thats brand new @19.5k with a $750 upgrade from the factory, street tires (well sort of ) and is smog legal with 14 lbs of boost! cheap yes! i know it more and you can't compare however the neon is a cheap just like the maverick was in 70's i know aint a japanese car but you understand the point. get that same motor used and stick it in a beater chassis like a dodge colt for under 2k and there you go... japanese motors are no differant. ok heres a sort and stupid story... i don't condone street racing thats what the track is for.... however one day this guy in this 67 mustang total tricked out 16 wheels cool paint job.. engine sounded healthy (very nice i might add) keep reving on me and reving on me.. which were the loudest flowmasters i have ever heard. and yes i really tried hard to ingnore it! really i did! but it got to the point where i really thought i should make this guy give some respect to me and this peice of junk neon i was driving. well to make a long short.. i think his girl friend was wondering why i passed him like he was standing still! and no this was not one of those fly by deals these kids do these days.... btw that was with the A/C on, i barley know how to drive a stick and i coundn't even hear my car over his loud exaust at WOT! word of note don't be fooled buy a rice rocket! just to clear things up... i do still love my maverick and NO i woundn't put a RB26, 2JZ or SR20 in maverick. and raito411 i still love you!
by your own account you point out the differences in performance of similar vehicles, and how surprising the differences can be. case in point for the "street draggin" days of my youth. my four door was all stock with a 2 barrel 302, the mustard yellow with LDO. i had a friend with a 65 mustang with a pumped up 289 four speed. he did a decent job of getting the parts together and should have by all accounts been able to smack me hard. the only thing i had on my side was the fact that my uncle and grandfather helped me tune mine (grandad was an awesome ford mechanic). Both of us were shocked when i smacked him down and laughed about it for years after that. the grabber at my hands tore the 4 door apart in the quarter and could turn circles around it. im sure there are other 4 doors out there that could smoke my grabber on one or the other, maybe even both. but i love my car how im setting it up, just like you guys do yours
