So explain to me why drag racers don't use them... a lot of bracket racers leave their car in drive for consistancy. Seeing as the kickdown would help out... was wondering why they get removed.

I asked a legitimate question, as its called a kick down rod, not a "transmission line pressure improver rod"

I'd also like more than 1 person to say that it's the truth and explain how it works. I know Jamie has a lot of knowledge, and I appreciate him trying to explain, but he's not a transmission expert by any means.

Send a PM to PaulS, he'll tell you all about it. I may even be a bit erroneous in saying that it has much to do with shift points. The vacuum modulator is primarily what causes the transmission to kick down, but I'm not sure how much it has to do with the shift points vs. the kick down rod.

Thanks Jamie for explaining it to me with the best of your ability.

I wasn't arguing, just trying to learn.

when i installed my...full manual...valvebody, the instructions from the tech. was to remove the...kickdown lever...and plug the end of the shifter shaft with the supplied plug (small freeze plug). also to remove the...governor from the tailshaft...my passing gear now is a manual shift to 2nd...:yup:

Bracket racers dont use them because like you said they want consistancy the kickdown add's an un-needed variable.Other drag racers dont use them because they shift manually so that the shift at the exact point they want. All it is for is to kickdown to make passing easier and it increase's fluid pressure for a reason i dont know, maybe it helps keep things lubed better, like i said i dont know.

Its good to see that there are people who understand the inner workings of the tranny.
Manually shifting also increases the line pressure too. So if you always shift manually then you have no need for the kick-down leveror valve.

    Thanks for the info.

I still have had transmissions last years w/o one as have many others so I had to ask.
I've always manually shifted them down, and tend to manually shift them when driving anyways. This would explain it.

Now, I need to learn how to adjust it (sure it's not hard) for when I put the 460 back in my brother's 79 F-250, so maybe his transmission will last longer. I just disconnected it from the motor when we pulled it out, so I can't just hook it back up and it work correctly I'm assuming

Let's face it - if it ran right without the linkage Ford would save the millions of dollars it spends (spent) installing and adjusting them.

I think it was so...Little Old Ladies...wouldn't have to manually shift to passing gear. same reason for the tight stock converters and soft shift valvebodys.

That was my opinion as well, considering the name of the part... lol
