    chances are...if you had reved the car up a few times it would have sucked the flames down the carb. and went out on its own... with no or little damage.

    It shouldn't be able to catch fire with an air cleaner and filter on it. If you are running without a filter then stack fires happen all the time.
    NEVER run an engine without a filter in place - it prevents stack fires.
