What year Maverick had no "Maverick" emblems or script anywhere on the outside of the vehicle? How about the Comet?
I know this one... I owned one. Although, IIRC, the gas cap actually had "MAVERICK" written on it. Not 100% sure about the Comet, but I'd assume it was the same year as the Mavericks in-question.
What year did the Maverick have a late-production run of rear quarter panel extensions and bumper fillers integrated into one piece?
The very first designs of the Maverick were actually called a Falcon. Dave Boyer did an article for the newsletter about this with some documentation he had found. 1977
Correct! I was going to quote the date on that article, but it was from 1968. The "photographs" above were earlier, from 1967. I'm some glad we ended up with "Maverick" script on our fenders instead of "Falcon" like the early prototypes suggested!
Can thank Mustang & Bronco for that, birdies were out and horses were in... Thought -- if Maverick had of been called Falcon we wouldn't be having this discussion, instead we'd be talking about 4th generation Falcons...
Aside from the 71-72 Grabbers, what is the only other model and year to get the sport lamps in the grill, complete with switch on the dash?
No offense meant at all, Jeff!!! All I meant was that I just cannot imagine our cars being called anything other than a Maverick. I like the whole "Wild West, Un-branded Livestock" feel of the nameplate.
To elaborate a bit more... Ford may well have been considering the clay model as a Falcon replacement, or just didn't have a better name at the time... With the little bird's sales at all time lows and Mustang & Bronco doing well, it made sense to use a fresh name to take advantage of the NEW "out on the range" theme(Fords marketing team wasn't exactly dummies)... At the time 10 years was a good run for most models, many didn't make more than six or seven... Example Fairlane/500 lived in full size models from only '55 thru '61, but by 1960 had been demoted to bottom rung transportation specials, Galaxie was the darling begnning in '59... The all new for '62 intermediate Fairlane was only around thru '70... Upscale Torino/GT were introduced in '68 and by '71, Fairlane was history... Yeah one may argue the full size and intermediate models lived on so consider this.. The Fairmont & Zephyr that repl Maverick & Comet were only around from '78 to '83, just six years...
