so what have you tried so far? what is the voltage at the battery when your trying to crank the motor? have you tryied cranking it over with the coil wire off of the distributor? was the car running then just stoped starting or did you get the car with this problem or did you change something and then the problem started?
Mav won't start I had a 67 Mustang with a similar problem - it turned out to be a resistor wire that came from the ignition switch. They can change resistance without any visible evidence. I replcaed the wire and it started. before that it would just crank.
The car was running I removed the motor and trans. Cleaned the engine compartmnet, did some sheetmetal repair, and paint. Rebuilt the trans and cleaned and painted the block. I have checked everything I could with a meter and everything has come back good.
I think you might need to retrace your steps in a logical order. If your main concern is no crank, then start with the steps I mentioned earlier. You said you painted the engine compartment. I would make sure the solenoid actually is grounded to the chassis. It is case grounded. There is something missing from this equation. Give us as much info as you can (your symptoms to the letter) and any repairs done and parts replaced.
what is the battery voltage when cranking? did you try disconnecting the coil wire from the distributor and then seeing if it will crank?
Alright this is what i got now. put the old voltage regulator on and now I have consistant cranking but still no firing. I got the timing TDC on the compression stroke. I dont have backfiring through the carb anymore now it is backfiring through the exhaust. What does that mean? Timing to advance or retarted? Also sometimes it would crank then nothing. I went over and messed with the starter wire coming off the solenoid and it would crank. I did this a few times, does that mean that the starter wire has a short? thanks
