he made no mention of the fact that all the 70's fords were prone to cowl rust as one of the big problems. that is not just the mavs and comets but the oh-so-loved mustangs. like what was already said, his facts are more opinion than based on any reliable fact.
i do agree that the front ends were not the best but they were never designed to be a road racer and besides even with the best suspention you are still going to be limited by the dinky, skinny bias ply tires they came out with.
it is interesting to see what misinformation is out there though.

this kinda of cracks me up...

its just like the car magazines,... why is it that when ever something is written, people read it,and take it as fact? how many times have you read an article in a magazine and believed every word?... ok,,..maybe thats not a great example :biglaugh:

even factually written articles are often biased by the authors own opinions and views.

maybe its time for someone that likes mavericks and comets to write a book on them, that way there would be another side to the negatives that show up on occasion, then people could,at least in theory, come to their own conclusions (y)

sorry to interrupt.you can all get back to your rant now:evilsmile :D

Barnes & Noble never actually do any of their own publishing. Most of the books with their imprint are recycled from another publisher, or are purchased mostly complete from a packager. This one appears british in origin, as the facts are skewed and the terminology very british. I am guessing you paid less than $10 for it.

Many brits can be very snobbish about cars, which is kind of odd, considering the "classics" that came out of the UK over the years. People are really lining up to buy those Humber Super Snipes, aren't they?

Speaking of Brits and car building: How come on an island as rainy as that one, there was never a British car built with wipers that worked worth a damn?

yeah some of those car mags are as full of $hit as the tabloids!!! (i AM sure that i saw jimmy hoffa riding shotgun in a mav with elvis on the jersey turnpike though) i remember when the pinto came out.. 'bout the same time as the (cough) vega. i read in motor trend (yep the vega was the 1971 car of the year if i remember right) as far as comparing the vw super beetle to our car of the year... (close to quoting them as i can remember) aside from low initial cost, superior fit and finish, unsurpassed fuel economy as well as oustanding reliability and resale value, the super beetle has little if anything going for it.:biglaugh::biglaugh::biglaugh:those magazines really know their stuff. motor trend car of the year is like a kiss of death. real experts writing this stuff.

I like my big bumper,I like the rear quarter panel's,I like the excessive body roll, and most of all I like how people can't seem to look away from it once they see it.All these things along with the minor rust spot's give it aittiude. The writer of this article pointed out obvious issues with the vehicle, not bad for someone with soft hand's who drives a leased economy car.(y)

Back when Maverick were new, they were usually bought and used as a second car, for the wife and kids and for college students. They were not taken care of and they were always dirty. When I was 15 I used to wash my neighbor '72 Grabber for her because she could realy care less! This is what got me started with Mavericks. Most cars had rust troubles back then but, I dont think any of them were intended to last more then 10 years if used everyday. I got my Maverick Ziebarted when it was new and it was always clean. A lot of people told me they did not like Mavericks until I bought my '74 Grabber! I wonder why?

    YEah the british....

made some stinkers of there own for sure. The straight six is a very popular engine over there. I could understand why they think that the 4.0 L is gutless. They didn't even bother to make it crossflow or design it with a seperate intake. The Maverick is not that ugly, more unique. I don't have my Maverick as a "G" car. But from seeing some new suspension parts out now I'm sure it could handle in the .9G range if set-up with tubular front suspension and a watt's link out back.:drink:

I was in a used book store thinking the same thing recently. It seems like ALL books like this are very EURO-Centric...trashing cars like the Mav, but telling us the Renault Alliance or Fiat Abarth was the best car ever or something...

We should put together a mav book, with all our knowledge...I picked up the Ford Century book a few years ago and the Mav is mentioned countless times, but never shown (They decided to feature a '73 Capri instead???)

I think the Mav is also a favorite punching bag of the Car Talk guys as well.

I was listening to Car Talk over the weekend, and a girl called to ask about a 1966 Mustang. Her father was getting her one for college. I was surprised by their answer. They said the '66 Mustang was unreliable and unsafe, and she'd be better off with a new Mustang, eventhough that would be unreliable, but safer.

I wondered if they came down so hard on a '66 Mustang, what they thought about Mavericks. One of those guys favorite car was a 69 Dodge Dart. That should tell you something about their judgement!

We all have Mavericks over 25 years old. That doesn't sound unreliable to me. Many are daily drivers or driven long distances regularly. I love the way Mavericks look. Most people I encounter in it love it too. I'm always asked if I want to sell it. It handles well, drives well, and is easy to maintain. A book on the Maverick is overdue.

My little 69.5 has never broken down on me (at least that I haven't caused, not the car), and is more reliable than my 2004 Ranger truck. I like the idea that I have a car that I can rely on, to go anywhere I need to go. They can take their "worse car" stuff, and stuff it!

I'm paraphrasing, but I've heard them refer to the Maverick as 'the best advertisement Volkwagen ever had' or somesuch. Yeah, their taste in cars is all over the map.

I'm not 'suggesting' anything, but it's interesting how their tastes always seem to be inline with what's new and trendy (New Bug, PT Cruiser, Mini). I've heard them drone on and on about these kinds of cars...kind of out of line for a couple of 'shade-tree' types.
