Nicely done Jamie , this is the most impressive thing about this website, you get a guy like this who is really trying to tackle something new, and the patience and understanding that people on this site give is very commendible; Jamie you are a good example of what the people on this site are all about:Handshake
Fount out the problem, the engine will crank and keep cranking but on the distributor the center piece where the rotor button sits the thing that opens the points is not turning all the way it will turn alittle but not all the way to the lump. do i have a timing chain because on the distributor it was kinda like a gear and if so do you think the timing chain broke or maybe that gear thats on the dist. broke or fell in. i have a 302 to put in it just no transmission right now. probaly not but do you think the transmission thats in it now will bolt up to my 302, the 302 is a 89. when you switch motors do you cut on the body or just condfiguate motor mounts?
Hmm... it sounds like you need to pull the distributor back out and see if the roll pin that holds the gear on has sheared. If you stick the rotor button on and try to turn it, does it turn? Could also be something up with the springs in the mechanical advance? That distributor looks new compared to the rest of the engine, did you buy it rebuilt somewhere? The transmission that's in it will bolt up to the 302 with the proper bell housing and torque converter, but it's not a very good idea. The 6 cylinder transmission probably will not last very long behind the 302. You really need to get a transmission that's built to handle the extra power of the 302. You don't need to cut anything, with the proper frame mounts, the engine will bolt in.
The engine is old and has been in it since my grandad gave it to me in 95, the dist. i just bought 2 weeks ago. I am going to pull the dist. right now will write in about 30 mins. I recently when i started this project put a few new parts on it.
I pulled the distributor and everything was fine that was not the problem. what do you guys think, what would you do? thanks
do you still have the old dist? if so lay them side by side and make sure they are the same... and it was installed all the way into the block? ...Frank...
Man I am about at a loss. The distributor should be the same between 170-200-250. If I were there in person, I know I could figure it out, but it's hard over the internet.
...want to ride up there this weekend and a take a look... leave Friday, come back Sunday... ...JFF...
the dist. was installed all the way in the block, it was running fine for about a month with carb problems and then i got that fixed and gave it a tune-up about 2 weeks ago, i was driving up and down driveway when it just stopped, just wanted to let you know that it was running fine so any suggestions maybe an old part that could have went bad. i am going to put the old dist. back in and see what happens when i would take new dist. out it would spin when its in engine it wont spin makes me think something in the engine is stopping it.
take a flashlight and look into the dist. hole. have someone spin the motor over and see if the dist. drive on the cam is turning. you can also take a screwdriver and see if you can move the drive gear on the cam with it. ...Frank...
