i guess your talking about the distributor spinning when you take it out and spin the gear with your hand right? when you put it back the rotor button doesn't turn when you turn the engine? sound's like a broke timing chain to me. Is the engine turning over pretty much like it always did? any faster or slower, sound any different?
I'm just going to go ahead and say I have no idea if you are being serious or not. But you know I would!
let him check post #32..and see what is happening there. e mail me a map quest to his place...from my house.... ...Frank... fra1947@aol.com
Where are you at in Virginia. I wish everyone would put a location not just a state but this is just my point of view.
I am guessing that this problem has not been resolved yet? Did you ever put the distributer back in and try it with the old distributer or put the new one back in and lock it down tight? I am going to guess on the more positive side and say that it isn't the timing chain and say that my guess is that you put the new distributer in and it was running ok and something loosened up and the distributer lifted up some and was not seated properly therefore your gears aren't meshing. Only reason I say this is because if it was the timing chain it would be turning over faster than normal and sound a lot different. If the dissy just popped up a little and the gear wasn't meshing it would still sound and crank over the same..... If it weren't Easter weekend I might volunteer to take a ride as well. I'll have to double check but I think Charlottesville is not that far from me. Yeah well it's a little further than I remembered (about 3 hours) but not too far for a road trip to lend a Mavericker a hand, but I am sure you'll have this figured out by the time I am able to make a road trip, (couple weeks Hope it isn't the timing chain.... Try putting one of those (I'd try old one firt) distributers back in and make sure it is seated firmly and the gears are meshing good and then try it.
tried looking down dist. hole could not see much, alot of gunk. i think i should not have changed the oil maybe changing it messed something up. the gear in the engine was spinning when i was turning it over i could see the gear but not much else. put the old dist. on and it would click everytime i turn it over but would not spin. If you think i could tell you more over the phone i will call anyone who wants to leave a number or pM number. thanks p.s. dist. was all the way in both times, it seems like something is in there that is stopping it from moving when i put it in First race is here on sunday in Waynesboro.
If the oil hadn't been changed since 1993, it was definitely a good idea to change it! I hope it wasn't drove an extended period of time with that old oil. But man I'm really at a loss as to what it could be though. That just dosen't make any sense. It almost sounds like the gear on the camshaft is worn away or something. I know we've been over this already, but are you absolutely positive the distributor is seating all the way?
yes it is seating all the way in motor. screw is all the way down on dist. i got the car in 95 so im not sure when the oil was changed i changed it when i started working on the car. when u guys decide if u are coming down let me know.
The timing chain is slipping. The nylon has probably worn off more than half the cam sprocket and it isn't turning the cam. You are lucky if you haven't bent any valves. You can check it by turning the motor clockwise until the distributor turns and then see how far you have to turn the crank before the distributor turns the other direction.
Paul is probably right. Though I don't think these engines are close tolerance enough to bend any valves.
when i turned the engine backwards by hand the rotor still did nothing it still would not spin like it was doing before. i am fed up with the engine and i think i am going to take it out and try to put my 302 in after i rebuild it. that will probaly take about a week when i pull the engine out i will tear it apart to see what the problem was and i will send pics of the problem. i am looking for a transmission i have one but it is a three speed in the floor and i would hate to put a clutch in it. if any one knows someone willing to trade tranny for tranny let me know and thanks for all the help and advice.
