Like Rad said,, the out pipe being bigger can make it louder. I like my 40 series Flowmasters,,,,very loud when I get on it. Just right for cruisin,, at idle, people hear it. Dan
I really don't think so TL. It;s gonna be tough to get a really deep sound out of a mild 302 through manifolds. Sound is as much a function of the motor as the exhaust system.
Well, the other 302 that I have for it has a higher lift/longer duration cam in it...would that increase the volume of the exhaust?...
Edit due to misreading post: Larger diameter mufflers won't do much of anything, but if you either have your tailpipes remade in a larger diameter or even just the last couple of feet in a larger diameter it will get louder. We used to call them "boom tubes" at the muffler shop.
I have the Ravin's on mine. I like the deep mellow sound at idle. It sure turns heads. When I get on it, look out! (LOUD)....I like the Z-wave in the Ravins. Flowmasters has chambers...I still haven't figured out why everyone thinks the Flowmasters are the bomb....I prefer the Ravins, better tone....
Summit Racings Stainless chambered mufflers sound really great! Description..... Straight out of the '60s. Manufactured in the U.S.A. by Stainless Works, these chambered mufflers replicate the deeper, nostalgic sound of a 1960s factory chambered exhaust system. Available in a brilliant polished finish or a low-maintenance natural finish, they feature a 304 stainless steel body, core, and packing material. The bodies are 3 1/2 inches in diameter and are made from one piece of 16-gauge material-- there are no welds on the outside of the body to crack or distort, and the stainless steel will never rust. The straight-through design, combined with a perforated louvered core, delivers a deep rumble at idle and an awesome full-throttle sound. Part Number.....SUM-630725
Derrick, Most people assume that mine are FM's, and ask me which versions. They say that they sound deeper or different, but similar. When I tell them 'Hooker Aero-Chambers' they say, 'I didn't know Hooker made mufflers!' They dont have the resonance in the interior that most FM's have. Seth
heres somthing that might help there flow master 40s rejects ones that dont come out right but not big deal like the 2 1/2 might be a little larger $29 bucks http://www.jegs.com/cgi-bin/ncommerce3/ProductDisplay?prrfnbr=253217&prmenbr=361
You know, I've got this weird muff called a "flo pro" on my 5.8L bronco. Sounds kinda like a flowmaster, but much more mellow inside. Not a bad sounding muffler for what I think is a no namer.
T.L., if all you're trying to do is get more rumble at idle, I'd have to agree with 1badmav on this one, the cam is the way to go. You'll get a nice throaty purr out of it and naturally you'll get more performance too. I think that's the best way to spend your money for the results you want. Sam
that funny.. glad to know that those sound like that.. i always wondered what they would sound like... i'd like to know what those SDT Edlebrock(almost said STD.. ) muffers sound like
haha...and I thought I was the only one who did that! Built everything from a home-made "flowmaster" on a 3 wheeler...to a home made straight through aluminum case race muffler for an old 4 wheeler. The "flowmaster" sounded awesome. On my bro's Maverick, before he bought it from me, I built an X pipe for it, and put a pair of Dynomax super turbos I believe they were...don't remember for sure. Best sounding car I've ever heard....but it's not a stock motor and has headers. Being it's on a SBF and has it's own distinct sound, it is definetly different than your run-of-the-mill Mustang with FMs on it, much quieter than most any FM I've ever hears, but much deeper at idle. The X quiets it down quite a bit when you hit the throttle, but it's still loud enough to hear 1/4 mile away. Doesn't have any raspyness to it, but it also doesn't have the typical X pipe almost 180 deg header sound either...more like a cross between an old Hemi and a big block chevy....which both have their own sound. It does sound good! You guys ever hear a true 180 deg header? Here's a clip of a 450 HP Mopar 360 circle track engine on the dyno...top RPM is 6500. http://home.ripway.com/2005-3/269071/dodge450.wav
