I also have the deep pleasure of owning a 1973 Mercury Comet. Worth every penny. Love it. You will too. These are fantastic cars. Welcome aboard and greetings from NC.

    She has arrived..

 So after much anticipation my baby made it today. what a filthy mess. i guess 3400 miles behind a tractor truck will do that. Thanks again to Coop who came all the way out to Oak Harbor with a grille and a gas cap. i immediately installed both, gave her a bath and put her to bed for the night. The diecast Coop, still dont know what to say about that..thanks again. So who has the info on leaded vice unleaded gas. my uncle is telling me that i have to use this lead additive everytime i fuel up. is that necessary?

I made it to Phil's in time to see the Comet arrive. Glad you got the grill & gas cap installed. Hey, you are more than welcome for the diecast. Always great to meet new Comet/Maverick owners & talk cars. Just glad I was able to help. Here's some pictures of your baby, enjoy:

:Welcome: from the Tampa, FL area

Looks like you have a nice solid car to work with there.

Leaded vs. Unleaded gas ... when cars switched to unleaded gas, the OEMs started putting hardened exhaust seats in the heads to help combat valve erosion.

That being said ... I got my 72 Comet with 70K miles on it, drove it (pretty hard) for the next 70K on unleaded gas only, and finally killed the original motor by cracking a piston ... a symptom of abuse, not the gas I was using.

Bottom line ... if it OK now, I really think you will be fine for many miles.

Are you planning on a motor upgrade in the future? ... worry about getting later heads at that time.

thanks for the info on the fuel situation. as for the motor, not sure what im going to do. im pretty set on keeping the car as original as possible. the engine is pretty solid as far as i can tell. the car only has 67000 miles on it. now if i stop with the lead additive what octane should i run...will 87 be sufficient?
