New problem...starter stays engaged for a few seconds

    I bought it because of the MUCH smaller size, not because of the external solenoid. It is almost half as big around as the one I took off. and doesn't come anywhere near my headers.

    And since you asked, what year did Ford put aluminum radiators on Mavericks? or 347 or 351 engines in?(y)

    I guess I should have taken more time to look at the link in your first post.
    Not a problem to me when replacing parts with better ones in any car. I just wasn't prepared for that kind of starter - single minded trouble shooting - You need to run a battery cable (always hot- #4 or larger) to the battery terminal of that starter and use the solenoid to run a 12 gauge wire to the solenoid wire on your starter. That will cure the "run on" and provide the starter with enough power to do the job.

    ya me to, new starter from autozone. it zipped on us. i went back an sead yes this is a good starter, but not the one for a 74 mav, well that worked for me.

    Exactly what I did yesterday after work (before I started messing with the carb). Fixed it RIGHT up.

    Glad I chose the right size wire. I was debating between 10 and 12, and the 10 just seemed excessive. Thanks for the help guys!(y)
