you can use a 3g alt. any alt shop can tell you how to wire it to work. they came on the 93 to 95 mustangs. just change your pully to the v belt pully. they put out 130 amps. you can also use the 80s to early 90s alts but they are around 75 amps and their power wire conecters had a melting problem. Those alts are internaly regulated so you will be able to get rid of the regulator on the fender altogther
I used the one Summit has. It bolts right up, hook up the hot wire and go. It's chrome plated to boot! Getting rid of the old regulator and wiring is a bonus. http://store.summitracing.com/partdetail.asp?autofilter=1&part=SUM-810302&N=700+115&autoview=sku
If you put on a high amp alternator and you have an ammeter you will have to do away with your ammeter. You can't run a 60 amp ammeter on a 130 amp alternator system without causing a big fire potential.
the 3.8 alternators from 96-98 will work as well. and the 80's-early 90's alternators are a little bigger in size and aren't as appealing to the eye, but they do carry 75 amps and are internally regulated, as stated
I despise ammeters. I had one in my '74 Grabber that damn near set the car on fire while driving down the interstate one day, never again. It was installed by a previous owner and the wires were not ran properly which is what caused the melt down. But I still will never run another. I have a volt meter in my car.
I ran into the same situation years ago with a 69 Ford van. And later with my 67 Mustang. There's an "energizer" circuit that runs from the ignition switch to the alternator to "turn it on" when you start the vehicle. Both had this circuit go out, looks like yours did as well.
Problem solved via a 10SI Chevrolet one wire alternator... Thanks everyone for the input, and thanks to Mr. Scooper77515 for helping me out with part numbers and wiring. It was super easy to install, I have about 150 miles on it now, and it works excellent. This is an 80 amp alternator, no more dimming head lights when I hit the brakes or turn the turn signals on. I think I'm going to put one of these on my Fiat, too. Took the other rebuilt Ford alternator back and got my money back, and took another old Ford alternator I had laying around back for the $30 core charge on this one. I was half expecting them to give me some static over bringing back a totally different Ford alternator for the core charge on the Chevy one, but they didn't say a word..
i dont believe in swapping different 'brand' parts onto vehicle but this has always been a very good investment. i dont blaim you for swapping, although i plan to run a 3G on my car i may one day throw a chebbie alt. on one of mine. glad u got it fixed
I personally don't care about mixing brands. You'll never find a Chevy engine in one of my Fords, but as far as the peripherals go... if it works, it works...
