Distributor is a pertonix conversion. Ignition coli is new and is mounted on side of engine compatment away from motor. All fuel lines from the pump to carb are away from heat sources. Metal fuel lines are also wrapped in heat tape. Rubber lines are perfomance medal braided lines. I can't see where the heat exposure it has could vapor lock the lines. I was pretty had on the engine just before this problem started. Lots of quick starts and burnouts. From the responses Im' thinking I may have damaged the fuel pump.
ive had similar problems with an old motor i had. it had a malory unilite distrubtor. it would just shut down then restart. i tryed that distributor in mashori's car and he had the same problem with it. i would try a different distrubtor if you can find one to try.
Vapor lock can happen without excessive heat. Especially with the HVP gasoline used in wintertime. (High Vapor Pressure, or in other words, it evaporates more easily) High alitude will also cause it as well.
unlock/remove the gas cap and try it. there may be a vac. being put on the fuel system (plugged vent). i had a motorcycle that did this...
It sounds to me that you stirred up some rust or water (or separated alcohol) in the tank. If it is debris (like rust) then you may have to either remove the filter sock on the end of the pick-up or clean out the tank.
I like Franks idea. It only happens after 10 miles or so. after stopping the tank has time to pressure equalize and the pump returns to working. then as the gas gets used, it creats a partial vacuum and the pump can't keep up again, so it runs out of gas again.
I had a problem like that on my 460 when I was driving home from Atlanta picking up a car. When it stalled I could remove the fuel line at the carb after the engine shut down and it would be under A LOT of pressure shooting hot gas everywhere. This was after the engine had been sitting a couple of minutes. I never did really figure it out but if I left the air cleaner off I could keep on driving with out stalling. I always thought it was vapor lock. I have since moved all the gas lines and did away with rubber lines in favor of metal lines as far as I could go. I have those wrapped in foil. I have not had anymore trouble but haven't taking a long trip with it while towing since then either. Another problem I was having at the time but only found the problem was I never could get a smooth idle without a bump, bump and almost stall. I found that my carb base plate was cracked causing a vacuum leak that I think only leaked when the engine was hot. That could have leaned things out making the vapor lock worse. Not sure if this helps. I would stay away from any rubber hoses as I think they hold the heat in worse. A metal line covered in rubber I think might even be worse. This is just my feeble thinking though clint
