I agree. And it seems like the oil leak is getting progressively worse.

But still...would the oil level be that high up normally?

My guess is the bolts that hold the flywheel are leaking, if they arent sealed when installed they will leak and it will look as if the rear main is bad. Especially with 7 quarts of oil in the engine.

The (correct) oil level will be the same distance below the crankshaft no matter how many quarts your pan holds. The crankshaft doesn't touch the oil because it will make air bubbles and/or foam which is a bad thing because air bubbles don't lubricant moving parts that great.

Sounds like too much oil along with a leak possibly created by too much oil .

Could be leaking from the dipstick plug?

How much room does a dipstick need?

This canton pan has several locations for dipsticks, and they are all plugged.

I bought a lokar flexible dipstick but could not find a place to mount it where it didn't interfere with steering and/or headers in any of the holes. If I use the stock dipstick location, it will only measure the useless front part of the pan (now using a rear sump pan).

There might be a spot in the block I can mount it a la mustang 5.0 style, I need to look into that, and then I could purchase an aftermarket mustang tube and stick and see if it clears.

This pan has at least 3 access holes, and all are tapped and plugged with a screw-in plug. Just none of then where i can easily get a dipstick tube into.

About the Oil Leak at the Rear Main Area ... Check your oil filler Cap .. if the cap isn't allowing air to flow BOTH WAYS then the engine will create pressure and the oil will be " forced" to exit somewhere .. The rear main is a logical spot .. Remove the Oil Cap .. and if it's the chrome " push in " type .. try applying Suction , and Blow through it .. If you can't accomplish this without a great deal of force .. there could be a problem with the Crankcase Ventilation process. Just a thought .I had a car behave in the same manner as you've described and the Oil Filler Cap was the culprit .. Changed the cap .. Problem solved. I wish you success.

My oil filler cap is my breather filter in the valve cover. I can check it to make sure it isnt saturated. Maybe clean it out.
