On the timing chain, if engine was running when you tore down, all you should have done was line up your gear marks, took off chain and gears and install new gears and chain. Camshaft or crank should not of had to been moved,,, well small fraction to take up wear from old chain maybe. If you moved one of the gears, most likely you are outta time. I don't think you will have to pull engine, take rad out (grille out makes seeing better) pulleys, front cover off and re-time timing set. I always triple check, turn over 3 times to make sure all is lined up correctly. Easier to triple check now then tear down later. Push rods, may want to take to machine shop and have them measure for you. Engine may have been rebuilt at sometime and length could have changed. Thats just to double check and make sure you get the right rods. Also, has the water level went down any? I doubt if head gaskets leaked as I don't think engine has run enough.
ok so i wasnt supose to move the cam gear at all then and i was told to move it and line them up before. so now that i know that how to i reallign it? and i should be able to leave the motor in and all that would be nice and one less thing i have to do. and ill have to regasket everything again too though. yea i was trying to find the length that someone said on this thread i think it was 6.905 and i cant find that just 6.900 and 6.950 . so i guess i need to find a machine shop and get the measurements??. the engine only ran for about 5 times maybe 45 seconds at the most so couldnt really tell if the level dropped at all i drained my radiator as much as i could last night already.
Push rods come in .050 or.060 lengths min. But yea just have them checked too be sure. When replacing timing gears, I always get #1 tdc on crankshaft lined up at zero. (timing light marks on crankshaft, don't forget, crank will hit 0 degree twice in one firing cycle, check dist. to be on cylinder #1) After getting crank on #1, tear front cover apart and look for timing dots on both the camshaft an crankshaft. Cam should be at 6 O'Clock and crank should be at 12 O'Clock. Take a straight edge an put on center of crank and cam, edge should be right on the dots! If not rotate crank SLOWLY to line up marks. After lining up marks, take old gear an chain off and install new gears with chain. Check your dots again with new parts, BOTH dots should line up on straight edge. If not rotate crank to 12 O'Clock and with chain off line up cam dot. reinstall chain, rotate engine (turn crankshaft twice) and wa-la dots should line up! I always double check from here just to put a smile on my face! NOW, with the problems you have,,,, I would take front cover of and line dots up the best you can and SEE where they are. THIS IS BEST DONE WITH PUSH RODS OUT OF ENGINE! No use in bending new rods. Get your gears and chain lined up again at 12 O'Clock on crank and 6 O'Clock on cam, rotate crank twice, cam will make one full turn and check for dots lined up. Just so you can tell longer story on prom night,,,,, check at least one more time! Check valve spring height to see if all are the same. Push down on valves to check for any sticky/bent valves. Install new push rods, rocker arms and before install plugs, turn engine over by hand slowly checking for problems. Button all up and fire up! Check dist. timing. Hope all goes good. Don't think I forgot much,,, and any problems crop up stop and holler,, YES a good idea to get manual also! Always good to look at pictures and read words! Plus if anyone comes by,,,, looks like you know what you're doing! Good Luck! PS open manual to the right section so people really think you are making reference! hee hee
ok i think i understand but im a little confused on with my timing set and cam. from what your saying im just making sure that the dots are lined up. but i turned the cam to make the dots line up when i put the gear on. and from what im understanding when i turned it that made it out of time how do i make sure its in time? like i remember making the dots line up when i installed it but if the cam takes 2 revs to the the cranks 1 if i turned it the wrong why to line it up wouldnt that throw it way out??and be why the push rods bent right??? im just trying to understand this is the first engine ive ever worked on so... yea
Crank turns two times to the cam one turn. As for why bent push rods,,,, Cant say for sure,,, cam timing outta whack, hydro-lock (gas or water in cylinder) or the push rod gremlins. Long time ago in auto shops, I did cam gears, HAD it PERFECT! Till I double checked and found out I was off! Can't remember why I was off but thats why I always triple check! How much did you turn the cam gear when you put new chain on?
see thats the thing i dont remember how much i remember turning it just dont remember how much i know it was like almost half of a turn and thats when i called my buddy and asked what to do and he said just turn it and make them line up. now i know thats its off just idk how much its off
Well,,,, get the front cover off and send a pic! Only rotate engine with NO push rods till timing is corrected
ok i can do that probably wont have the time to get out there and work on it in a couple days but ill post one because as you can see im pretty lost at what to do. thanks
Did this engine run before you got into it??? If not, the damage may have been done long time ago and you just got saddled with it.If original chain jumped time...Its possible that caused the damage and your repair may have been correctly accomplished, just to no avail. Good luck man!!!
no the engine ran before i just had a carb tuneing issue and i had to pull the motor to install a new steering box so while i had it out i was told it was easier to put in a new timing chain and re gasket the engine. but the old timing chain was very loose and the cam gear had a couple teeth broken off .
That could`ve been the problem,,, but you said push rods were ok then,,, correct? Good and safe idea to recheck timing chain.
