Maverick Funny Car Was just passing a little time and came accross this site. I have been involved with Danny Miller in this Maverick Funny Car project from pretty much the begining. We went together and dug the old Galpin Ford maverick body out of a 15 year sleep in a field in Michigan. So I think thats preety much from the begining. . I noticed this hasn't been updated with the progress in a while. The car is done and has been out. It's maiden voyage was at Indy. Car ran 6.43 at 179. Not bad for only running 1000 ft of the 1320 ft. I'm not sure how to post pictures here but here are a couple links of video shot at Indy. First link is of its maiden voyage. Second is of the 3rd pass on the car. The car in the other lane is the car Ron Capps has driven at a couple Goodguys events. Unfortunatly the driver left the line in High gear and the car only ran 6.80s http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-4022591310221165647 http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-9164851241044655747
Other then Indy and maybe a hotrod drag night before a show, Goodguys gave up on drag racing so the opportunities for good funny car racing with vintage cars is limited. NHRA will hold 3 nostalgia events at Fomosa (Bakersfield) and one in the middle of the country this year, but that's all the big events that draw spectators. The funny cars were great to see and Capps, Worsham and others from the NHRA pro ranks really gave it a shot in the arm. Goodguys had a 5 race points schedule, but conflicts with the track management and last season getting rained out at all but 1 event killed the future of VRA racing. I hope NHRA picks up more of these type of events, but right now it is the pet project of the retired NHRA staff that runs the museum that is doing the reunions and the two other races at Bakersfield with the B'field track management. They have been great events and will continue to be. ANRA and other such small associations do not have the funds to promote events on that scale. I really miss these events as I attended them all as part of the event staff.
tucson ran the nostalgia funny cars at there 10th anniversary race and reunion this year. ron capps ran and roland leong had his car there. they did have a full fiels as this was a points race for them. lots of fun. they put on a good show. the qualifying got rained out but the races on saturday were fun to watch.
What association is putting on the points racing? I know the drivers/owners were putting a group together, but it was more for rule making and such. Are they bandiding together to sell their show to tracks and set a points series out of that like CIFCA?
thanks for posting those videos Dan (next time I see Randy, he's getting more grief) there have been a few updates on the car in the Drag forum, but not since its made any passes. very cool. I hope to catch it one of these days in person
Nostalgia Funny Car Association (NFCA) is the organization of F/Cs. Most of the members are West Coast but there are some Midwest East and Canadian members. I think that organization will take a turn for the better over the Winter months. The picture isn't as bleak as Bob painted in earlier post. Goodguys will be back in racing. Although the Left coast may not see any of it. The popularity of these cars has alot of tracks attention. Its a growing pains issue but with car counts going up and performance levels getting better and more well known names being involved its only going to get better. I sure hope so.
Chi Town Brown,,, I would love to see car! I am in Burbank every other week day. Staying at Best Western 83 & Cicero. Any way we could hook up? Thanks Dave Stuckey
Dave The car is based out of the St Louis Missouri area were Danny Millers shop is located. If your in that area you may want to give Danny a call. And try to stay out of Hooters just down the street from the Best Western.
