I had no idea they moved it to the back in 73. Ya learn something new every day. Plus it appears to kick up higher and has an extra stripe in it.
Let him sit on it a while. The interior being beige is not real popular(sorry JMO) and the tacky rims will turn a lot of people off. If it is still there in a couple mths I bet he will be more than willing to wheel and deal. IT does look clean though and 5500 is not unreasonable if it is a a documented GT. Those comets are hard to find in good shape. I would go take a closer look and ask to have it inspected by your mechanic. If he is unwilling to do that he is likely hiding something. Money talks and BS walks as the saying goes......... I want a 71 or 72 comet GT or not but no room and no money to many other projects. They look cool in that Mercury lets be different kinda thing. I would ditch the white stripes and top and go black better match for the color of paint and interior IMO.
Did you check it out? Let him know you are Maverick/Comet literate and know what it takes to correct things that are wrong and fix things that are broken. Play up the fact that you'll have to redo the stripe, possibly paint, swap out the wheels, do whatever to the interior, trunk, engine compartment, etc. Maybe he will take off some $$$ since the car is not correct. But then again ... if you snooze sometimes you lose ... How bad you want it? Remember, if it's a real Comet GT ,they are harder to get than a real Grabber, and if it is rust-free it could be hard to pass on ...
all the original that I have seen have level stripes in '71-'72. It seems like some of the reproduction stripes for those yrs. have a slope or curve. The '73-'75 stripes arch from the front to the door handle and then kick up and back down in another arch. Seth
