Unfortunately if the balancer is worn out usually the outer section of the balancer comes loose, because the pulley is attached to the inner portion of the balancer it may be that the balancer it is moving on the crank snout which is not good because the balancer should press fit to the crank..........maybe the keyway broke (there is a keyway that aligns the balancer to the crank so the timing mark is in the proper location...........if that is what happened you should be able to just replace the key.........if not then it could be the balancer is worn or the crank snout is worn or????
Luckily there are bushings that can be purchased if the crank snout is worn........but this would mean reaming out the balancer to fit the bushing that would go over the crank snout.
Take the balancer off with the puller and you should have a better idea of what the problem is. Take pictures and let us know.
Believe me it is simpler to repair than it sounds....................ask me how I know...............I've done it before.

Took balancer off car and it was beginning to seperate on one side of pulley. I hammered it back in but do not want to trust it. I guess I will post on parts needed and see if anyone has one. it cost apx. 200.00 new.

I know they are expensive, but I'd look around. Getting another used one could end up in the same situation, at least with a new one you have a warranty.
Is there an OE part number on the balancer?

There used to be a guy in Salem, OR that rebuilt harmonic balancers, I had a 427 Ford done by him years ago, and he guaranteed it for life. I know he had been in business for over 30 years and had done more than 15000 balancers with no returns.

    Hope that helps.
