I have a fan but no controller and my alternator is only 65amps. I thought the same thing LOL. I wish. This is a really nice radiator too. It's thicker than the old busted one. The fins are nice too.
your fan should not hit the hose guys run 6 cyl rads all the time and have no clearance problems it just looks close,, Justin has a 74 runs that same radiator,, looks close but will not hit trust me
My alternator is only 65 amps. Wire it up always on, and be done with it. So it takes a while to warm up...your car is back on the road.
Shouldn't have a problem with that radiator. I did a V8 swap on a '69.5 with that radiator, and it was close, but it worked fine. That said, I drove from November 2008 to March 2009 without a working fan on my car (relay went out). I didn't bother to fix it, because 95% of my 66 mile daily commute is cruising on the interstate, with it being cold out, it didn't start to get hot unless I got stuck sitting somewhere for like 5 minutes..
I have no idea. This fan was in my shed and it fit so I used it. It fits in the shroud but thats from a 78 Ranchero. But the Ranchero was a 302... 7 blade, 17.25 inches across.
The fan is 17 1/4 inches across. The other fan I have is a Mopar one and is 5 blade and wont fit so this might be the original. 302 with A/C and a C4. 1973 built in 72.
Don't need a controller just to get you down the road. I had a work truck (AKA The Kidnapper Van) that I held together with the bare minimum of maintenance, and one of its key features was a Volvo electric fan attached with zip ties and wired to a toggle switch. I used a beefy switch intended for AC current so it didn't even need a relay. I had to pay attention of course, but this way I could let the truck warm up or go down the highway with the switch off, and turn it on for stop-and-go traffic. A setup like that would get you around for now, then you can do it "right" later.
Probably will tomorrow but tonight it's dark and too cold to work. I have the front end wrapped in a tarp and a heater going underneath to keep it from icing again. I did turn it on and it immediately ran and idled...I miss my car.
Well I installed the radiator and hooked everything up. It had to go 2" to the passenger side and 1/2" up. This left a 3-4" gap in the support on the drivers side that I used a metal strap to mount the top of the radiator with that spanned the gap. I filled the gap with a license plate bolted and secured to the support and the radiator. I installed a new 13# cap and a new flex bottom hose because it was all Autozone had. It will work. Of course the hose points on the radiator were too narrow for the top hose so i used a rubber sleeve on the top and super tightened it on the bottom. In order for the flex to clear the PS belt I had to shim the radiator 1" on the drivers side with a piece of wood. Everything misses the fan now and it doesn't leak. It does get steamy though. I may reuse the 16# cap. 13# may be too weak for a V8 who knows. Somehow i got it all in and working in about 2 hours of solid rigging and engineering. Test drive went fine but the steam is a concern, any ideas why? There is of course no shroud now and I don't think even a factory one would work. Is my fan too wide? 17.25" across. I'm thinking a 15" fan would work nice. I am concerned about the Taurus fan being straight wired without a relay or a larger alternator.
"Somehow i got it all in and working in about 2 hours of solid rigging and engineering" That's a good one
The factory fan is too wide and hits the top hose. I tried simply moving the radiator up to the lower mounting holes(1" or so) but it hit the hood when I closed it so it had to go over instead. Now the fan misses by about a quarter inch. As soon as I get the electric fan wiring this will all be a memory and my sweet ride will be back to normal but I have to have it going in the morning to go to work or I am fired. I have 2 hours of daylight after work, this is what I had to do. Works fine for now. The radiator is beautiful.
Relays are around $10 i think, so for an additional $10 you wouldn't have to worry so much. I'd just run it on a switch w/ a relay until you can afford a controller. I personally don't like the controllers however
