Yes, I used the Ford Motorsports rear disc package. I have a Strange Engineering setup in my car. Had a local reputable machine shop cut my 9" down to fit my car and weld and box the perch's in. I am using the stock master cylinder and proportioning valve. The brakes work perfect and no drag whatsoever. This I did not expect. I was under the assumption from years of bad thinking that a proportioning valve worked differently than it actually does. You do not have to change the valve. I am going to change the master cylinder due to the fact that it is the original one. I do not have the ebrake part done yet. I will finish this part of it this winter. Dan
Anyone ever try that Ford Motorsport conversion for Explorer rear discs on a Versailles diff? Would be an alternative to the heavy units that come with the Versailles, and be a lot easier to get parts for too. John B.
Here's a good link with more info on the swap. They speak of a spacer required because of the different width of the drum backing plate and the disc setup. I believe this will solve the axle movement problem. Explorer/FMS Rear Disc Swap -Corbin
For what it's worth I did basicaly the same rear disc brake swap on mine as old guy refered to but used front rotors off of a jeep cherokee and the were 4 1/2" bolt patteren
if any of you are doubting how well they work, don't doubt any more. I've hated the manual discs I've had on the '74 for a long time (wayyyy too much pedal effort) but a while ago marked the first drive for the rear disc mav. Stopping power has at least doubled, and pedal pressure has dropped to about half of what it was. Was it worth it? definetly!
Do you think that you could possibly write a how to article on this swap for the Mavs/Comets? I looks very, very nice, and I would love to do it. Did you ever figure out the movement issue, or does it not effect anything during braking? Thanks, I am very excited that it works so well. -Corbin
I was just thinking the same thing! It would be great resource for all Maverick/Comet owners to have a tech article to follow. I am sure it would become one of the top mods!
Yes, I have to get with a friend of mine (need software) but I plan on doing a how-to article. Stay tuned! lol
I just ordered a set of brackets, hell for 9.95 a piece that is great. Those calpers and rotors are cheap. This is rear disc for less than 150.00 easy. Thanks for the tips oldguy and Robert raney. Should go good with my intended 99 up mustang gt twin piston caliper on the frt. I have an auto so I do not need any stinkin parking brake. Thanks again.
Have you already done that 1999 and up Mustang caliper swap? Did you use the method described on this link? http://www.woodyg.com/fairlane/finfo/discs66.html If so, how did it work? If not, what did you use? Thanks; John B.
Volvo?? Working in a wrecking yard that is imports only I recently heard that with very little modification you can trasnplant the disk breaks off of a Volvo in the place of the rear drums of our cars. This is something that I am going to look into a little further because if I can snatch the parts off of a car that is going into the crush pile then the boss will sell them to me for core prices. I will post in this thread again after I figure out if this is true or not.
