Not to Hijack a thread but... Anyone know if they make a retro fit Shoulder-lap belt combo for our cars. I personally think seat belts should be up to the driver and passengers whether they use them or not. Children should always be in seat belts and car seats-booster seats. (Children are too young too make a life and death choice). I would like to install shoulder belts in the rear of all my cars. I will gladly put sets in all of them if I can find a way to do it. Thanks Jerry
There is a person with all the sense in the world. IT SHOULD BE LEFT UP TO THE PERSON, BUT CHILDREN SHOULD BE STRAPPED IN UNTIL THEY CAN DECIDE FOR THEMSELVES. It is not the government's resposibility to protect me from myself. If I decide not to wear my seatelt then so be it, that is my perogative. If you think it is a great idea then wears yours and keep your opinion in your car. I am a grown adult and I know the risks. I have seen accidents where the seatbelt saved a person's life and I have seen accidents where not having it on saved them. I have seen people ejected and killed because the didn't have them on and seen accidents where people got crushed up in the car and killed because the seatbelt held them behind the steering wheel. It's a gamble no matter what you do. Wear it or don't you put your life in your own hands and the hands of the idiots driving around you every time you put the key in the ignition.
I thought of this thread yesterday when I saw an accident around the corner from my house. It doesn't have a great deal to do with seatbelts, EXCEPT the man that was killed was wearing his belt. He ran a red light in his Jeep and T-boned an SUV. The driver of the SUV was belted and walked away, even after the Expy rolled 3 times after impact. The driver of the Jeep was ejected right out of his shoulder belt and was a lump under the yellow tarp by the time I saw the wreck. The normally white air bag was blood soaked red. Really striking and sad. I have no idea how there was time for that much blood inside the Jeep?!? The millisecond it took for impact, then air bag release, then his body being drawn right through the belts and on to the road. It had to happen extremely fast. Yet all the blood... His belt didn't fail. It was still buckled and soaked in red. Sorry for going off topic a bit. The buckled belt and ejected driver made me think of this discussion. Edit: Forgot to mention that the Jeep didn't roll. The grille was pushed back massively though. The roads a the intersection both have 45 mph speeds, however most folks do 55. Going from 55 to 0 in a Jeep, in a millisecond must have huge G force.
Frank makes such short, yet insightful posts.... I don't think I have ever been able to make a post so short! That made sense anyway. And there was this one time, when I was a kid, that... Oh, wait... sorry.
Belts Had both the '66 Ford and the '67 Pontiac out the other day and both of them have lap belts, but no shoulder belts. The '66 Ford is an original ambulance built by National with under 8k original miles, and The Pontiac is one of only 27 Pontiac Hearses built by Superior in 1967. Not that any of that has anything to do with seatbelts - I just like to brag.
