I did use a timing light. The timing is now set at 12 BTDC. It seems to have a lot more get up and go. I'll have to wait to replace the wires, being a broke college student and all. Hopefully, a good set of plug wires will fix the problem. Thanks, Jonathan
It could still be a timing issue, or the previous bad timing could have fouled a plug. Check those and your plug gaps. I like my Motorcraft plugs around .42. You will get a different opinion on that depending on who you talk with. Seth
If they are new plug wires I'd take'em back and get them replaced. Also if it's just a little bump in the idle it could just need some more tuning on the A/F mixture. I was helping a friend work on his 65 F100 trying to trace about the same problem. We finally found the trouble in the brand new spark plugs. They were Autolites. The plugs had a nice bright blue fuzz right where the ceramic joins the metal. I have never seen them do that but 3 were. We replaced all of the plugs with new Motorcrafts and it ran like a new truck. clint
Yea , its cool to open the hood at nite in a dark place an watch all the flashing blue sparks . cheap thrills !!!!!Another way to check your wires , get you a fairly long screwdriver, fashion you a ground wire , clamp one end to a good ground on the engine an the other to the metal shaft of the screwdriver ( small battery cable clamps / alligator clamps ) Be careful , as your working on a running eng . Holding the screwdriver by the handle trace it over each plug wire about 1/4 inch off the wire , if you got a wire leaking / shorting out , You will see it jump the gap ,,, If you think you got a cylinder miss firing / dead , An its got ole wires on it , I use a reg. ole electrical test lite , Just ground the neg. test lead , An then on your dist . push the metal part of the tester into the top of plug wire boot on the dist.( your shorting that cyl. out ) An listen for a change in the engine if theres no diff. in the sound . Then that cyl . is not firing for some reason , bad wire . fouled plug , etc .If you got a Tach hooked up you can see how much of a drop it puts on the Eng. Sorta a poor mans cylinder balance test
